I think the character designs fit for the overall world style, could they have done better? Maybe, but I think the design in WW is about the best Zelda has ever done. I love the colors and the world.

You can't be too picky about art in Zelda, it does cool things but it's still nintento and art is never their number 1 priority. Even the more "realistic" Zelda styles are not any better in terms of character expression, there were a few times in both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword where I could not take things seriously because of how the model looked or was animated.
