hmm... I get what you're saying, but I think that with a story done well you should be able to feel the poignant moments anyway.
I mean, look at FFVII with its polygons, and yet I still felt for Cloud when he was going through all the spoilers.

IA. Maybe some people can't overlook certain graphics or art styles and that sucks, but there are plenty of games that look unimpressive but still hit hard when it comes to story or character moments.

I think the difference there is a deliberate choice of art style versus working with what were at the time the limitations of the graphics.

I could take FFVII seriously because they goofy polygons weren't a conscious choice, they were literally the best they could do with the graphics at that point in time. But with things like what's pictured in the secret... yeah, I'm not sure I could take it seriously either, not when they chose such a Saturday morning cartoon-ish style for it.

OP

Yep -- that's how I feel. I never had trouble with Ocarina of Time because, although low resolution and low tech, the atmosphere and design let me "fill in the gaps" so to speak and enjoy it. It helped that when I looked at the art and saw what they were going for, it really appealed to me.

But Wind Waker just consistently looked silly. It was very technically well done. The environments and effects were GORGEOUS but then I'd look at Link's enormous head on his tiny, footless body and it'd take me completely out of the moment. I didn't feel like I was playing an epic adventure and there was no sense of danger -- Link smashed up against walls or bounced out of fire like a cartoon character. It leeched the seriousness completely out of the game.

Which is a pity because I've seen some great cel-shading done -- like No More Heroes or Prince of Persia. But Wind Waker always irritated me.

DA But can't you kind of give Wind Waker the benefit of the doubt too? It was an extremely creative idea for them to come up with at the time, because nintendo just wasn't going to get super high res graphics out of their own consoles, so they chose a style that not only their devices could handle but also looked good on their devices.

But I also think a lot of Zelda concept art is super ugly, OOT being one of them (in spite of loving the game.) Wind Waker is one of the few where I can say I love the art without adding an addendum to that love. I could see an argument for WW not being as creepy as some Zelda games, but I felt like the adventure was still there.

I can see why people wouldn't like the character designs but after I got used to them, I really love them. The faces are big and simple because they wanted Link (and the other characters) to be more expressive, and it REALLY comes through. Because of that, I feel like Wind Waker's Link has a ton more personality than a lot of the other Links. If you're going to keep Link silent, that's how you can do it and still keep him an interesting character, IMO.

I just hated their feet. The faces I got used to.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this is Nintendo we're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even make an argument for that being petty because I stopped playing after those assholes made Link right handed.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You are the pettiest of petty people.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Because suddenly everything changed because once again right handed people are more important and god forbid they keep Link a lefty because righties wanted to play with the wiimote and have Link look like what they were doing? Because lefties can't even play a number of games because the way the 3ds is set up for righties?

Wow. Fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Please make this a secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you miss the part of the Wii games where you could choose what hand you use?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you miss the part where I was talking about the 3ds being impossible for lefties?
Did you also miss the part where I was talking about Nintendo taking a left handed character and making him a righty so righties didn't feel put out that whatever they did on the wii wasn't exactly what the character did onscreen? We all know that you can play with either hand. It was just a dick move to change something so ingrained in a character that has been around since the mid-80s because of something so stupid.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Except, much like how it is awkward for left-handed people to use the right-hand-oriented 3DS, it would be awkward for a right-handed person to swing their right hand and have Link swing his left hand. It was fine for games like Wind Waker, where you didn't really have any direct control over his hand, but I'm sure you're aware of how weird it feels to play with the "wrong" hand. I do think that Skyward Sword should have had a left-hand option, however, especially considering how involved the sword combat is. It's strange that they included it in TP but not in SS -- perhaps it required extra calibration? No excuse, but a possible explanation. Link is still canonically left-handed though, regardless of the right-handed option.

I hate to point this out, but the majority of people are right-handed. It's a matter of pragmatism on Nintendo's part designing what will work for most people.

And suddenly, the phrase "oppression Olympics" takes on a whole new and wonderful meaning.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think the character designs fit for the overall world style, could they have done better? Maybe, but I think the design in WW is about the best Zelda has ever done. I love the colors and the world.

You can't be too picky about art in Zelda, it does cool things but it's still nintento and art is never their number 1 priority. Even the more "realistic" Zelda styles are not any better in terms of character expression, there were a few times in both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword where I could not take things seriously because of how the model looked or was animated.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, Wind Waker is fucking creepy and the style fucking enhances it and I won't be told otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for putting into words what has been bothering me about that design.

Ironically, while I generally don't care for cel-shading as much as the more realistic take on graphics, I rather like the character designs in WW. They're adorable.

In general WW felt more like a whimsical story and less like a serious one than other Zelda games, anyway. It didn't give me The Big Feels the way some of the other games have, but it was a fun play.
