I found it more amusing before I was into DW, because all of a sudden my flist would explode with "David Tennant! Say it ain't so!" Then it was Matt Smith...

However, I actually thought Peter Capaldi was well-received? Oddly I'm into DW now, but less in touch with the fandom. (Basically, most of the major Whovians on my flist either left LJ or stopped loving the show. I have no idea why this always happens. Murphy's Law?)

He has been mostly well received, but there is a sizeable part of the fandom that is mad that the Doctor isn't young and hot anymore (as if some people don't find him hot and as if everyone finds Smith/Tennant/Eccleston hot). Although there has been noticeably less "it has changed now we don't like it" from Smith-era fans as there was from Tennant and Eccleston-era fans.

That part of fandom that hates him also has a significant overlap with the "We Hate Moffat" psychos, which doesn't help. Jesus, Moses, Mohammed and Krishna could all appear together to declare Moffat a great showrunner and their response would be to say that it was a sign that Satan and the Westboro church were obviously the true religions. They just hate anything and everything he is involved with.

Personally I was a little uncertain at first but the last two have rocked; giving us his scary side in Into Dalek and his lighter more childish side in Robot of Sherwood. Capaldi hailed them both, and made them both feel like the same person.

I kind of agree? I mean, there are lots of people with legit gripes against Moffat, some of which I agree with but love his stuff in spite of. But then there are the ones who go out of their way to find fault and to never find anything good in his stuff and who purposefully try to ruin the experience for others. And I've seen a lot of the former actually like Capaldi and just still not like Moffat's writing.

I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks of Moffat. I think he sucks for a variety of reasons.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually philstar22, I read a thread on here a few days back and I learned that not one single person in fandom thinks that, except for a bunch of fanboys who only think that because they're jealous virgins, and in fact Capaldi is the hottest thing since just-baked bread.

Ha. Personally I'm not attracted to any of the Doctors (except perhaps Eight a little bit). But I'm glad there are people who find Capaldi hot. He's awesome, anyway.

Bless your heart anon.

That's because the major whiners left who either loved Tennant and won't accept anyone else or are a bunch of teenagers who require the Doctor to be hot and young and have some romance in the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is just that a lot of RTD fans are petulant twats really.

This wank is probably as old as the first regeneration.

Ahh, yes, I was waiting for the inevitable "this wank is old" comment.

I hear the first letter ever sent to the BBC about Doctor Who began "Verity Lambert is ruining Doctor Who, and Hugh Davis's audition was much better than Hartnell...".

Change is written into canon

I was hesistant to get into Doctor Who for just that reason - I only like shows where I can get invested in the characters and having said characters then leave can be pretty tough. And I'll admit, I think I am going to have a harder time with this regeneration than with the previous ones in New!Who, since I was very attached to Eleven. It probably doesn't help that I have zero attachment to Clara, so having her around in the transition is zero help.

That said, I certainly can deal with the new Doctor and we'll see how things go. I don't expect to like Twelve as much as Eleven but I can still enjoy the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that if you can't handle change then it's the wrong show for you but it's also kind of a weird show in that regard, the writers do want you to be attached enough to the Doctor and the companions that you'll tune in but you also have to be ready to see them leave.

It can sting when a particular Doctor or companion really clicked with you, but there can also be times where you're a lot more ready to move on. I think I'm already liking 12 better then 11 for instance, not that I actively dislike Matt but he was part of some of my least favorite DW episodes ever and 12 is just a little bit more my style.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I likely will stop watching when Jenna leaves. I don't care if he isn't young and hot; I'm loathing what a massive dick he is. At least the previous three tempered their egos with a hint of fun. 12 is about as fun as a horse kicking me in the chest.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, if only he were more fun, being a dick would be fine. Huh?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yes. Fun and a dick > boring and a dick.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
For me, part of the reason I am liking 12 so far is because he's a dick and the text treats him as such. Sometimes 11 was a little hard to deal with because he'd be a dick but then like... it often got ignored or swept aside in his "fun" little rants that were actually often hugely jerky.

Everyone has different taste, but I'm enjoying 12 as something a bit different. The show has needed a different dynamic for a while.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that he's kind of a dick. I love his contemptuousness. It's such a nice change of pace after OTT silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Cheers to that!
