Being emotionally stable and upstanding is awesome, though. Characters who are mostly emotionally stable and upstanding are the best characters. The problems on the plot side of things are very real, and it sucks that these characters are basically just sort of thrown into the plot, but I don't think the model where a character has to have a neurosis or learn an important lesson about themselves is necessary.

That's all well and good, but I think the problem is that so many female characters end up in that slot and nothing else.

Oh, sure, I definitely agree with that. I just don't think emotional stability is a bad thing in a character. I guess I think it's more a plotting problem than a character problem, maybe.
