You're a bad feminist because you want female characters to actually contribute to the plot?

I agree with you on some of them, though I like most of them anyway. Can you really say that about Peggy, though? Pepper is still a well-developed character, IMHO, but Peggy isn't remotely just about Steve. She clearly has flaws. She's clearly a woman of her time and yet she's independent and strong and complex.

I find them dull too, anon. They have no agency of their own, they're totally there as accessories for the main male characters.

Even Uhura, which makes my blood boil because original Uhura was awesome and interesting.

Huh. I would not have included Pepper in this list. I think she has had character development through each of the movies. She has certainly been integral to the plot.

Being emotionally stable and upstanding is awesome, though. Characters who are mostly emotionally stable and upstanding are the best characters. The problems on the plot side of things are very real, and it sucks that these characters are basically just sort of thrown into the plot, but I don't think the model where a character has to have a neurosis or learn an important lesson about themselves is necessary.

I can see where that argument could be made for all those characters. I like them, but... yeah, there could be more.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Jane is the worst of all of them tbh. I thought she was bland in the first movie, but the second movie essentially destroyed any bit of personality she had that didn't revolve around Thor. (And sometimes she did sciency things. Mostly she made offhand comments or fainted.) The Thor films are my favorite of the MCU but wow, Marvel. Did you even try with Jane? She's apparently a decent character in the comics. The fuck happened.

Also, am I the only one concerned she's going to die in the third film for (more, can't forget Frigga) Thor angst? They brought up her mortality so many friggin times.

I kind of just love Pepper for being Pepper, but my big problem with Jane is that she was such a fun, entertaining geeky character who mostly focused on her own interests in the first movie-- and then in TDW we began with Jane having dropped her own interests to mope over Thor. Dammit, Jane, you don't need to pine for a boy!

I think they all have distinctive roles/personalities, but I agree that several of them could use more development, new!Uhura in particular. (Nuhura?) My issue with her extends to everything in the reboot movies, though, so I don't really count that against her as a character, if that makes sense.

I think my problem overall is that a lot of these fandoms (mainly reboot and MCU) tend to go into paroxysms over how great they are and "omgggggg flawless ladies!!!" when it's clear that, for the most part, these aren't very developed characters. They're cool, and I really like Peggy myself, but they're not given the narrative attention that the (male) leads are.

Really, it seems like these fans are trying to reach a quota of lady loving in order to not be like "those other fans" who ignore the female characters in favor of the men, so that they can then feel absolved and go on to salivate over Kirk or Tony or Steve or what have you. At least that's my experience.

Better to be a bad feminist for liking these characters than liking the worst female character ever written/acted in Secret #4

Well, I like them all, and I definitely don't think they all have the same personality, though I will agree that most of them could use more development or could be given more screen-time and plot relevance. Peggy is getting her own TV show though...I don't think she fits here.

It doesn't make you a bad feminist to critique female characters, OP! You definitely don't sound like you're just bashing them for stupid reasons. You want the female characters to be better, that's all.

Can't comment on Uhura since I just saw the first remake, nor Peggy whom I only saw the last minutes of Captain America. Pepper was okay in my book, and at least they have some nice chemistry going on (and no, I didn't see IM3).

That said...

Boy, did they drop the metaphorical cake with Jane. She ended up being a plot point in Thor2 and Thor&Loki banter definitely took the screen. The time she wasn't passed out, she was angsting about Thor. Super fun!!!!!1 And personally I'm not a huge fan of Nathalie Portman, but this one... sheesh.

And don't get me started on whathernameis in Batman. I don't know what I'm more angry about, the fact that she had to be fridged to give Harvey and Bruce some angst, or the fact that Two-Face ended up feeling slapped in pretty quickly just so the movie could have two villains.

My point is... that I agree with you on the ones I know.

I love these ladies and I do agree that they could do with more development, it's one of the reasons I am looking forward to Agent Carter because I am so excited to explore more of her character and personality.

I disagree that they have the same personalities or no flaws though.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree whole-heartedly, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
No, I agree - and I say this as someone who loves females characters. I like these women, but I just don't find them that interesting. We've moved on from female characters in movies who are just eye candy and useless, to female characters that can be cool and intelligent, which I like. But they're often still not developed or independent from the main male character's storyline, and it still makes them feel flat and unrelatable. And they're too perfect for me to find them that relatable. It's why I'm interested in the new Peggy Carter show, I want to see how her character expands outside of the CA movies.

I think we have watched very different movies. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they're all supporting characters and love interests, so... yeah, they do fill the same roles. I wouldn't necessarily say they have the same personalities--Pepper's personality is very different from Peggy's, for example. But the don't have arcs because ultimately, they're both in a movie about other people.

Which I don't mean as an excuse. I think that's precisely why we need more female led movies. Women aren't going to get better roles, more developed arcs and more deeply explored flaws until they fill different roles. In particular, protagonist and antagonist roles. (Holding out hope for Agent Carter for just that reason.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
