"except Uhura, and only because she's such a disappointment compared to her predecessor"

SMH when people say this
I wonder if people ever watched the series or they're projecting the fandom idea of the characters.
The other Uhura wasn't developed at all. New Uhura is more prominent and we see her having feelings and agency and she had only 2 movies, unlike the version by Nichelle Nichols who had a whole television series and a couple of movies but never became more than a background character. She has no character development whatever, they wouldn't even tell us her name or that she was a xenolinguist.
I'm saying this because I loved Uhura. In fact, I even read the biography by Nichelle Nichols and what I'm saying here is the same opinion the actress had of the character.

I agree that nu!Uhura is more developed, the thing is that I don't particularly like what she was developed into. The original Uhura, while extremely limited, was revolutionary for her time just by existing, the new Uhura feels very mediocre for our time to me, like the rest of the strong female romances in the secret, because there's room to do so much more with her today than forty years ago that isn't taken advantage of. But then I feel that way about the entire reboot, and the original series wasn't even my favorite Star Trek.
