If they had been cast with (white) men you'd sing to the high heavens how wonderfully awesome and developed they were and how they had the most pure and deep connection with the male protagonists. This is the sort of BS that makes me want to punch babies.

Think you're projecting/making assumptions a bit too hard, anon.

Maybe. I'll fully admit that.

But I look at characters like Natasha and Sam from the Winter Soldier movie and I think they're both great.

Natasha, even though she's a supporting character, clearly has demons of her own about getting too close and letting people see the real her. She relies on SHIELD, in a lot of ways, as a mask for who she is. So tearing it down at the end of the film was great for her. Her relationship with Nick Fury -- as a mentor and almost paternal figure for her -- also helped to make her more interesting.

Sam, even though he was only introduced in this film, was great I thought because he seemed like a very real person with his own problems and life outside of Steve. The inclusion of Riley and his worked as a veterans' councilor didn't just help to give him ties to Steve -- it showed how and why he'd get involved and that he could understand Steve's situation with Bucky.

LMAO

I have to agree though. Even if it's not the OP's case, tumblr and AO3 teaches me that fandoms pretty mediocre male characters and they will write any kind of fanfiction about them. But once they have a female character that is interesting and not so bad like others are, they hold her to higher and unreasonable standards (if girl is a secondary character she probably won't be written as the protagonist) and try so hard to prove that she sucks all the while still worshiping interchangeable white hot guys that really don't have that best of character development, or the most original.
