I figure the naysayers just don't know how to cook something that complex and don't get what he did wrong.

That's what I thought, too. I make ice cream regularly, and really, you do need plenty of time for it to harden off after you scrape it from the mixer. Not to mention that the average fridge freezer isn't going to do a great job of that in the limited amount of time they had.

Baked Alaska isn't that complex though. It's just time consuming. It's cake, ice cream and meringue, that's it. And yes, I have made it before, with completely from scratch cake, ice cream AND meringue.
