For a second there I that the beard guy was Van Gogh from that Doctor Who episode. And I thought, "Wait, "sabotage"? I don't remember the plot line being that way..."

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. My brain was still trying to process the weirdly-worded secret just above it so I made the connection a bit strongly than I think I should have.

Right there with ya. I actually had to reread the text a few times to make sure it WASN'T Van Gogh from DW.

His beard is absolutely magnificent, but I agree 100% with you. He sabotaged himself by having a hissy fit and throwing it away. If he hadn't done that it would have been Norman leaving that week.

In any competition, always deliver something to the judges. Even if you personally have made a total pig's ear of it, you never know how much worse a pig's ear someone else might have made. He put it in the wrong freezer, so when it was briefly removed to make room for the people who were assigned that freezer's cakes he had no one to blame but himself. SO even if it were deliberately removed (which it weren't) it were still fair game. Then his little temper tantrum just made things worse. I do agree that the creepy editing made it look like a worse incident than it was.

In any case, as I think it was Adam Hill pointed out (or some other bloody one-liner merchant), this had nothing to do with baking, just we're so fucking pig sick of bastard cunts making this fucking shit basket country worse by the hour, we were waiting to explode at something. Fuck, but I hope the Scots vote for their freedom next week, at least those poor bastards will be well out of this Westminster shite storm.

Yes, and it's great! Great British Bake Off is on its fifth season.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's worth watching for just Sue Perkins alone.

I kinda agree?

Diana should have told Iain when she took his Baked Alaska out of the freezer (which imo she was in her right to do because he was not assigned to that freezer).

But if Iain hadn't binned it, the judges still could have tasted SOMETHING and he might not have gone home.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Chetna's wasn't looking much better, but she at least presented it, so I'd say you're right that he sealed his own fate.

But the extent to which the media took it, you can really tell silly season took its toll.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure the naysayers just don't know how to cook something that complex and don't get what he did wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought, too. I make ice cream regularly, and really, you do need plenty of time for it to harden off after you scrape it from the mixer. Not to mention that the average fridge freezer isn't going to do a great job of that in the limited amount of time they had.

[personal profile] dantesspirit 2014-09-09 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Baked Alaska isn't that complex though. It's just time consuming. It's cake, ice cream and meringue, that's it. And yes, I have made it before, with completely from scratch cake, ice cream AND meringue.

So this is as serious as to the debate of if it's called frosting vs. icing then?

To be fair, Ian admitted that himself. We Northern Irish can be prone to fiery tempers that do more damage to ourselves than others.

Any time I hear the word sabotage, I read it how they sang it in the Beastie Boys song. Sabotage! Can't stand it, I know you planned it, etc.

Hell fucking yeah!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
I just discovered this show (American) bc of all the brouhaha about this incident. It really wasn't a big deal, Iain overreacted and his ice cream wasn't set anyway.

This show is great though, I've been marathoning past seasons. I love how low key it is and all the delicious baked goods!

Well tbf the way the show was edited made it look like his ice cream was sitting out for a lot longer than it was, which in turn made what Diane did look like a total dick move.

But even after Sue Perkins and a bunch of other people in the show explained what actually happened, I still have RL friends who refuse to believe that it was his own damn fault. Oh, well.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I have to disagree.
It was perfectly clear from her own words that she had taken his ice cream (however soft) out of a freezer. Whether it was his freezer or not, you don't just take someone else's ice cream out of a freezer and leave it, for 40 seconds or 2 seconds. Hands off someone else's stuff.
She was unsportsmanlike and he felt hard done about what had happened, anyone would. Sure, he could have presented something, and maybe he was never going to win, but no one deserves to be treated the way he was by her.
I'm glad she's gone. She gave WI a bad name.
