So this is as serious as to the debate of if it's called frosting vs. icing then?

I always figured frosting was the thick stuff you put on birthday cakes and cupcakes, but icing is thinner and more along the lines of a glaze.

Do people really argue about this kind of thing?

"Do people really argue about this kind of thing?"

Welcome to the internet, you must be new here.

Well, I knew people argued about dumb shit all the time, but like I said, I always figured that frosting was specifically one thing and icing was another thing.

Heretic. In the UK it's icing for everything.

People will argue over anything!

You'd be surprised at the things people will fight over. I've seen arguements over bread, milk, olive oil... yeah.

Frosting and icing are two different things, though. Icing is sugar and liquid. Frosting is sugar and fat. Plus flavoring, in both cases. Why would there be a debate?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not in Britain. Buttercream icing is still icing. There can be debate because different countries and people have different naming conventions. Simple really.

different countries and people have different naming conventions

Well, once you accept that, there isn't much point in debate. Debate arose in the frosting vs. icing wank because someone didn't get that; as they saw it, there was the naming convention they were used to, and then there were a lot of people who were just wrong.

Don't even mention frosting vs. fondant.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
But fondant is made of inverted sugar. And there's no way you can roll frosting out and make things with it.

People don't know this?
