Awww. I haven't explored the Xenosaga fanbase much, so I wasn't aware Shion was so hated. I can understand a certain degree of irritation, but overall I enjoyed her and her storyline. She wasn't perfect, but I think that's what made her easy to sympathize with.

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly!

As for the fanbase: I'm not sure there is much of one at the moment. On the other hand, it seems the hardcore Xenogears fans look down on every franchise that came after, so it's always possible they may just be hiding. Xenoblade's seeing the biggest surge right now since the main character's in Smash and the new game's coming out in 2015.

Ooo, I haven't heard about a new game! That's pretty cool. Maybe now would be the time for me to play the old ones... (I only ever played Xenosaga, so when people mention how much they hate Xenosaga and how Xenogears is better I just go "?! Okay..."

Maybe Xenogears is that excellent, IDK, but Xenosaga (despite the flaws) is one of my favorite RPG series. (If only it wasn't so damned difficult for me, I'd replay it more.)

I love sharing this with people because I waited so long on a big story trailer, so here's the new game, if you'd like a look! This one isn't connected to the last two franchises beyond the usual dev suspects, so you can play in whatever order you want!

I've also played all the games that released internationally, and I think Xenosaga helped me appreciate Gears when I did get to play it. It's aged, and I don't agree with as many of the philosophical themes used, but it's still an experience. (I feel the same way! Xenosaga III's about the only one I replay regularly because it fine-tuned the difficulties of the last two. Gears was even harder because of the Doll sections. I hope the new one will be more accessible.)

Ooo, it's on Wii U... I probably won't ever get to play it then, but I might watch a walkthrough of it! It looks so familiar that it's making me miss Xenosaga, haha.

Hmm, that's a good way of looking at it. I imagine if you played Xenogears you would get more out of Xenosaga, but it's the same for playing Gears after Saga. (Ugh, some of the bosses in these games are brutal. Hell, just getting through the normal battles to save was brutal. I remember...I think it was one of the first major bosses in I, that boss took me like half an hour...then I died near the end, lmao. I was so pissed. Then in the last boss fight of III, I killed the boss with Erde Kaiser in a few hits. III was so significantly different. If Gears is even harder than the first two, I don't think I want to play it myself...)

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think someone's doing a playthrough of the first Xeno Wii game, so I'm sure you would be able to find one without trouble when the new one releases. I'm really hoping I enjoy it. I think Nintendo must be, too--they're even doing a portable version of the first game for their new 3DS upgrade.

That's for sure! It took me a long time to get a hang of the difficulty curve for Xenosaga, but I hadn't played a lot of games at the time. Gears was still kind of tough even though I'm older now. A lot of it was due to sometimes finicky controls and sections where you had to conserve fuel when you were fighting in the Gears. I would definitely suggest reading or watching an LP if you don't have the patience. I've had to do that for games when taking long breaks did nothing to make it better.

If you mean Xenoblade Chronicles there's an LP on YouTube already. It's what I've been watching since I don't own the system it's on.

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually meant Xenoblade Chronicles X/Cross since I linked the trailer to it in my earlier comment. Xenoblade already being covered by people like Chuggaaconroy was just my indicator for how easy it would be to find a sequel LP when it releases.

Hmm, when I finish up a couple things I should really look into that...

If I will or not who knows, but I'll try to keep it in mind! I fond of the art-style because of the similarity to Saga and I imagine the story would be just as ridiculous and complicated, which means I would probably enjoy that too. Long walkthroughs do tend to get a bit boring imo, but at least you wouldn't spend a lot of time messing around; I imagine the LPers know what they're doing when they begin.

What's the art in your icon from, btw? It's gorgeous and looks familiar.

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-10 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's from Mushishi! I have the fanartist somewhere in my hoard, but the show itself is one of my faves.

I agree on the long walkthroughs, which is why I'm relieved most LPers always seem to release in small chunks. I tend to watch LPs when I'm playing a quiet section of a game, but I prefer just doing general playlists instead of one long game (although it also depends on the LPer). I have seen some channels that only post JRPG cutscenes because they know the games are long enough to warrant the trim, so maybe that would be a more viable option for this one. They're pushing exploration so much that I bet the playtime will balloon for sure.

Eiiither way, I hope that helped a little. I'm big on budgeting time, so I try to use my ridiculous spam habits for the forces of good.

Lol, and I appreciate it! If I could find a walkthrough that fast forwarded through most of the fights I would love it. I would love that for most games tbh, just because there's so much time wasted with those. Even if the gameplay is good, it isn't fun to watch again and again. (Rarely is it fun to play again and again either, not after 60+ hours) The only thing about watching JUST cutscenes is you miss a lot of great stuff, so it's probably best to just play if possible. If not, you just have to make due.

Ooo, that art is so pretty. I'm going to Google that series.

Doll...sections?

Sorry, I just literally finished replaying XG a couple of weeks ago and don't recall any "dolls." Do you mean winning the character dolls?

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry for the confusion! I meant the Gears. I forgot it's only the new one using the Doll terminology.

(I was also watching some mecha when I replied, which probably didn't help.)

The key to talking about Xenogears and Xenosaga in the same sentance is realizing that after the first game, it was headed by an entirely different set of producers and have a different feel to it. Comparison is indeed the death of any enjoyment in anything. I enjoyed Xenosaga for what it was and I enjoyed Xenogears for what it was. (and I'm not going to lie, Xenogears was my favorite). But I've learned that the more you bash something, the less time you have to fangirl over something else awesome.

Also, love your icon! Sailor Uranus for the win!

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you! I just revamped my stuff after realizing how old some of my icons were. I'm actually the same birth month as Uranus, so I was already biased.

Back to the topic: so many older fans don't understand that, which is a shame! I would have been--hm, nine?--when Xenogears released, and until they released it on the PSN it was pretty hard to track down a copy. Xenosaga was my first brush with Takahashi, and it made me appreciate Xenogears when I went back and played it, even if I didn't prefer it. The reasonable ones who love the old and new games are always quieter than the "purists," to boot.

It's even sillier when you realize both of them had the exact same problems behind the scenes and never got released in the form Takahashi wanted. I think Xenoblade is the first time he got a finished product to where he wanted to be, even if he had to limit some of the scope. Naturally, a lot of people call that one too simple. Fans sometimes.

EDIT: I also forgot to add this, but hooray for Edea! I hated the last chunk of BD, but she was a highlight. <--Whoops! Should have been here. Sorry for the double edits.

It's a shame really, I wish that Takahashi had gotten his vision on both counts. One for the second disk of Xenogears (which was so linear that it made me want to bash my head in) and Xenosaga (where he left after the second game) but each game has it's own unique beauty. Both Yasunori Mitsuda and Yuki Kaijura did AWESOME on the soundtrack and have produced some of the most beautiful music for those series. Xenogears had the uniqueness of 'killing god' storyline which made it almost controversial for it's time (and had me rethinking my stance on religion just as surely as Utena rethought my whole concept of sexuality.)

But then Xenosaga had dynamic characters, the gear battles had been streamlined (it wasn't blocky and choppy like Xenogears) and the storyline wasn't rushed at the end like it was in Xenogears (also, bash head inducing.)

It's nice when the sane people in fandom meet up with other sane people. It really reaffirms my faith in awesome people out there!

(and thank you about the icon, I love Edea.. currently she's my favorite female ever along with Leia from Tales of Xillia!)

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
(There were so many cool ladies in BD. I hope Edea comes back for the second one.)

Wow, was killing some god variation so uncommon back then? Nowadays it seems like you can't go a step without killing a divine being along the way. Maybe it's just the SMT franchises becoming so popular. I think it's about as old, but I'm sure it had the same trouble as Xenogears with getting localized. I definitely enjoyed aspects of both games, though! I even own all the CDs since the music is beautiful, as you already mentioned.

I mostly just ignore fandom at large now and stick to my IRL group. It keeps things much more fun.

Back in 98, that was a new one. Final Fantasy Tactics sort of set the whole thing with "blame god or blame yourself' but Xenogears pushed the envelope with a lot of judeo-christian allusions. It almost didn't make it to the US because of severe religious themes.

I guess you could say that once Xenogears came over, everything became sort of old hat and killing god because de riguer.

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Neon Genesis Evangelion was the same time frame too, wasn't it? I just checked the original SMT release and it was almost around the same time--a bit older since it was the SNES. Guess Japan got on a major kick!

Actually if you look at NGE and the last disk of Xenogears, in the very last dungeon you fight 'seraphs' which look ALOT like the Angels from Evangelion (which leads me to believe that Xenogears probably ripped off stuff from Evangelion just like FF6 ripped off Star Wars.)
