This started out pretty waifu-y, but I see where you're coming from.

I have to admit that I didn't like Shion in the first game because it was like 'boo-hoo my boyfriend died' BUT I started to really like her in the next couple of games because I got to find out exactly what happened on Militia, her parents and such and gosh, that definitely had to shape her in an irrevocable way. I can't really imagine going through what she did, so does she have a reason for being bratty and irresponsible at times? I think so, but I also think that the game definitely highlights her 'growth' process.

Haha, as I say, I still found her frustrating, but at the same time, it was important. Then again, I'm one of those who, when people speak about how cool Squall from FF8 is because he's all emo-ish, remember that Cecil from 4 had a much better reason...

PS - You'd responded to me on BS because of an Arslan account, and well... Can I say I love you? You know all the older series and don't make me feel so lonely xD

Oh thank you very much! I do love the older series. I pretty much grew up with them which makes me slightly old enough to remember, but I remember all the fun fandom stuff back in the days and RPing Citan and Jin and a whole SLEW of characters from those series and I think that a big chunk of my heart is still nostalgic towards the old series. *bows* And you are automatically awesome because you have a chaos account!

and Cecil, well he was emo at the very beginning but he did have a definite growth process, just as Shion did. I mean Shion's not in my top favorite female characters BUT I think that she held her own.

I used to play Sigurd actually. AND I have a Jin account lol. Kevin's been bothering me to make him one too, but I'm afraid what might happen should I do so. Last time, he got into an argument with Zim ><. We should continue to poke each other with nostalgia when we can, it's so much fun! And happy someone likes I have a chaos, few people like him; I know one other person who does.

Yeah, but Cecil still had a reason. Namely killing innocents. But as you say, he does grow, just like Shion. And with Shion, I think she just really was being affected in large part by U-DO towards the end, as well as Wilhelm's manipulations. It's obvious no one expected Allen to get through to her and the despair she was feeling. Also, when you account for Cherenkov in game one, there's a hint that Shion, though at that point still able to resist becoming a Gnosis, is very similar to the man...

I liked her alright. There were moments where I thought she was mildly irritating, but then I'd come across a gnosis and remember I'm a big baby myself.

I like Shion because she's a tunnel-visioned, bratty, kinda bitchy, god-Allen-what-do-you-see-in-her trainwreck. She has flavor. Not always a good flavor, but flavor damnit.

I still find Shion to be frustrating, even with her trauma, but I think it's all important to the story. I've even RPed her before because she does have so many sides to her, including that frustrating show in game 3. But, sorry, she's still robo and Kevin sexual xD

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's all fine. My issue is with people who dismiss the trauma or get their panties in a ragetwist over a couple of stupid things she said or did (earlier in the games) and decide she's an unforgivable POS. I'm not going to pretend that asking an android if it had a conscience or threatening space suicide/homicide wasn't dumb as hell, but her not being the perfect heroine didn't ruin the game for me, either.

Re: OP

[personal profile] failsafegod 2014-09-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can understand that. Trying to say she has no right, at all, to feel as she does simply dismisses all her trauma. It's sort of the feeling I get with Kevin, who I also have played, when people say he's a terrible person who never loved Shion. No one in that game was supposed to be perfect, and just like real people, they sometimes drive you insane, but you still love them.

Awww. I haven't explored the Xenosaga fanbase much, so I wasn't aware Shion was so hated. I can understand a certain degree of irritation, but overall I enjoyed her and her storyline. She wasn't perfect, but I think that's what made her easy to sympathize with.

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-09-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly!

As for the fanbase: I'm not sure there is much of one at the moment. On the other hand, it seems the hardcore Xenogears fans look down on every franchise that came after, so it's always possible they may just be hiding. Xenoblade's seeing the biggest surge right now since the main character's in Smash and the new game's coming out in 2015.

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-09-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ooo, I haven't heard about a new game! That's pretty cool. Maybe now would be the time for me to play the old ones... (I only ever played Xenosaga, so when people mention how much they hate Xenosaga and how Xenogears is better I just go "?! Okay..."

Maybe Xenogears is that excellent, IDK, but Xenosaga (despite the flaws) is one of my favorite RPG series. (If only it wasn't so damned difficult for me, I'd replay it more.)

The key to talking about Xenogears and Xenosaga in the same sentance is realizing that after the first game, it was headed by an entirely different set of producers and have a different feel to it. Comparison is indeed the death of any enjoyment in anything. I enjoyed Xenosaga for what it was and I enjoyed Xenogears for what it was. (and I'm not going to lie, Xenogears was my favorite). But I've learned that the more you bash something, the less time you have to fangirl over something else awesome.

Also, love your icon! Sailor Uranus for the win!

Shion wasn't my favorite by the end of the series, but it's clear she had an arc and developed all throughout it. Some fans just have a hard time sympathizing with how trauma could exacerbate a character's personality (or they would rather not have it inform the character at all). I see a lot of characters in other fandoms get derided for similar reasons.

I have family members who experienced severe mental trauma, so I'm glad to hear you may be in a better place now, OP. It isn't easy.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know that Shion was so hated. :o She was annoying now and then, but I still liked her.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I liked her my first play through of the games, but when I replayed them I understand why people find her irritating. I understand why she is that way but all of them did. I don't hate her but she is probably my least favorite of the cast.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
People demand flawed characters, but really have a short list of flaws they'll find acceptable. Realistic flaws like being selfish or stubborn or thoughtless just don't fly ESPECIALLY if its a female character. For some reason its attractive to be pigheaded and rude in men.

Realistic flaws, even if they're with good reason, or complimented by a plethora of redeemable traits or resolved and worked through by the end of the story line? Get that shit outta here! There's no way an obsessed scientist character could have a myopic world view, obsessive and selfish motivation or poorly developed social skills. Pah.

I haven't thought about Xenosaga in awhile [I really don't care for the games] but Shion didn't really bother me. Can't believe there's a hatedom. Seems an unworthy cause.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

I never got all the hate-ons for Shion. I like her so much more than the sort of Yuna-esque characters you usually see as female RPG love interests. She's really fucked up. I think it makes her a more interesting character...?

I have to wonder if the people who call Shion annoying/a bitch have very different feelings about, say, Cloud... though he's more likely to get called whiny than anything else. The message seems to be here that a man expressing trauma is whiny (for having feelings) and a woman expressing trauma is bitchy (for not being perfectly nice to everyone). Nobody wins here, man.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
ah jeez, I love xenosaga. I still haven't beaten it though. I stopped after miltia in the 3rd one (the game made it a little too easy to put it down for long periods of time by novelizing everything in great detail). anyway, I always felt really neutral about shion. it was hard for me to pin her down as a character because her looks and voice changed drastically and her personality seemed to follow suit, as opposed to the other characters who got the same looks and voice makeover but felt more consistent.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I found Shion quite likable and sweet (barring her treatment of Allen) in the first game, but she became sort of unbearable in EP 2 and 3. I don't know why they changed her character like that, but they really didn't need to make her be so rude to practically everyone in the main cast. I hope you aren't as needlessly snippy at others like Shion is, OP.

What's wrong with her being robosexual though? KOS-MOS is awesome/gorgeous, who can blame her?
