(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 02:07 am (UTC)(link)Realistic flaws, even if they're with good reason, or complimented by a plethora of redeemable traits or resolved and worked through by the end of the story line? Get that shit outta here! There's no way an obsessed scientist character could have a myopic world view, obsessive and selfish motivation or poorly developed social skills. Pah.
I haven't thought about Xenosaga in awhile [I really don't care for the games] but Shion didn't really bother me. Can't believe there's a hatedom. Seems an unworthy cause.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 08:43 am (UTC)(link)I never got all the hate-ons for Shion. I like her so much more than the sort of Yuna-esque characters you usually see as female RPG love interests. She's really fucked up. I think it makes her a more interesting character...?
I have to wonder if the people who call Shion annoying/a bitch have very different feelings about, say, Cloud... though he's more likely to get called whiny than anything else. The message seems to be here that a man expressing trauma is whiny (for having feelings) and a woman expressing trauma is bitchy (for not being perfectly nice to everyone). Nobody wins here, man.
