Okay, so I'm going to be the odd one out here. I actually like OC stories. I am very fond of fantasy and science fiction settings, and often I come out of a book/trilogy/series with thoughts about the worldbuilding... oh, hell, like my partner was talking about Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time having sex-segregated magic and my first thought was "Hmm, what about a trans character in this setting?" Stuff like that. Fic that further explores the world setting with OCs because it can't be explored by the characters already in the story? I LOVE THAT SHIT. Hell, I even love OC stories in the same setting, if they're good; I really LOVE to see what other people do in the sandbox, and a large part of why I like a book or series (or TV show or whatever; hello, I'd totally read a fic about the Valkyries of MCU Asgard) is the world setting. So if someone wants to explore that with an OC? Great! More stories! Yay!

In fact, I probably prefer OC fic in general, because I have set ideas on characters based on the original work. It's easier for me to read crackfic that's totally out there, like trans headcanons or such, than it is for me to read fic sticking to the original closely but being not quite right with the characterization. If that makes sense. OC fic, it's an OC, I don't have that baggage. (But you better not fuck up the setting. LOL.)

I've written OC fic myself, but admittedly about my World of Warcraft characters. I like to write their backstories, and their ongoing adventures, since I'm shy about actually roleplaying (despite having played on RP servers for years and years >_<). I don't think this quite counts as the same thing, though, since most of WoW fic is OCs, thus it is less of a big deal than in other parts of fandom.

TL;DR: I'm really sorry you're dealing with this BS, because I adore good OCs. Keep up the good fight. <3

Thank you ^^

Reading this makes me very happy as someone who likes writing OCs in a Elsewehere fic type thing or exploring from OC point of view or just a fic with a lot of OCs that have more than a background role.

I actually like having fun with established settings. Because I believe there's always somethings going on outside the canon characters and their drama (at least in a well established verse. IMO a verse where the whole world revolves around the protagonist , is in most cases a poorly developed world)

I am forum based roleplayer myself and have played in a couple awesome individual forum based games that really helped me develop my OCs as well as introducing me to other good ones. we're all pretty OC friendly as long as the OC is good. So a lot of people there are kinda "wtf?" about anti-OC sentiments. Creating one's own characters is good and if the character turns out to be not that good it's because of the creator's lack of skill and it doesn't mean anything about ALL OCs in general.

I have a lot of OC fic some I haven't shared much either because I'm unsure , I took a break from it or I'm just writing it as an excercise to develop and play around with OCs.

Yes! Those are exactly the types of OC fic I love! (What fandoms do you write in, might I ask? If it happens to be one I like, I might be interested in checking out your work. :)

I feel the same way about established settings. Especially in fantasy and science fiction, where there is so much worldbuilding and often so many stories that could be told. Speaking as a published fantasy/romance author, I know that I will never have enough time to explore every aspect of my world settings that I might like to, and I honestly am one of those oddballs who'll feel like she's really "made it" when people start writing fanfic of my stories.

(I should mention, I would have no problem with fanfic involving my canon characters; I would love to see people's takes on them, too. But I'd especially love to see people exploring all the nooks and crannies that I hinted at or mentioned as an aside or dealt with in a small sub-plot but never had time to go into fully. I would adore that. And yes, if I ever get fic written of my fiction, I intend to read the fuck out of it. I'll be the damn test case if necessary.)

I love forum based roleplay; it's much less stressful than roleplaying real time. Weirdly, I don't have as much problems roleplaying in my family's D&D game, but I do online, especially with people I don't know well. And, I think, especially with the mechanics of the game, where often bar settings are common and there are multiple conversations going on. It's a good way to meet people, but for someone like me who has ADD and difficulty keeping track of things -- ouch. Forum based is much better, but I've had trouble finding ones that are active or that stay active.

I'm really glad your roleplay group has been supportive of OCs. OCs can be awesome when done right, even if the canon characters are involved. It's just a matter of fitting them in the right way and not overshadowing the canon characters with the OC (which is a mistake a lot of people make and why OCs are pretty much associated with Mary Sues, unfortunately). :(

OMG so much of this is just like me.

I write in Harry Potter and Danny Phantom mostly. My works are up on A03 and ff.net.

I honestly am one of those oddballs who'll feel like she's really "made it" when people start writing fanfic of my stories.

Yessss so true. I honestly want fanfic as much as financial success because I'll always have stuff to read.

I am a part of two RPs called Portal Breach and Novarus and most of us a re a big community OOC as well as IC. PB has gone for like 4 years and Novarus recently had its one year Anniversary.

They can indeed. I honestly see a lot of canon characters get treated like Mary Sues in fanfiction honestly so IMO its just a bad writing thing mis-attributed to to OCs.

On the not overshadowing front, in one of my stories I spent a lot of time working on and thinking about headcanons for canon characters and studying them to get them and I made goals for the fic , like having it do things with canon characters and their relationships with each other that I would have loved to see in canon. So before I started writing I had some excitement about writing the canon stuff and I didn't let the OC stuff take over. Also in the story , most of the canons' interactions with OCs serve as a foil.

EX: The canon villain has a business deal with this lady (an OC) and throughout the story he sees his vices and bad qualities reflected in her, and even though she's worse , it makes him realize how bad he got and through that he has a genuine change of heart and works to really overcome the flaws. The OC was his flaws and negative attitudes reflected and taken creepily farther.
