I won't disagree with 27 that the characters (uhhh, men included) in the FF games are stereotyped (they're fantasy characters, it comes with the territory), but...to say Paine is the least?

There is a large difference between character stereotype and character archetype, and not many here seem to realize that. Beyond that, what the fuck is this argument that the women suck in FF and the men don't?

I'm not saying that men don't, and while I'll agree that there is a difference between archetype and stereotype, people also need to realise that the latter comes from the former. We couldn't build archetypes without various cultural stereotypes, and from that standpoint, the characters, women especially, are stereotyped. But this is a failing with the majority of fiction (Japanese or not), not only the Final Fantasy games.

...Not sure the OP picked the right character with Paine, though. *cough*

Yeeeeeah, the Paine bit was the blindingly fail part of the secret, for sure.

Archetype does come from stereotype, but that really isn't relevant as they are ultimately NOT the same thing. If I give Tifa the barest description (fighter chick who pines for the main emo character), she sounds like a stereotypical and uninteresting character, but when you delve into the facets that separate her from the group (her insecurities, history, etc), the real differences emerge.

Gosh, I just don't know what you mean. Pretty Pretty Dressup FFX-2 was the bestest best game ever, with the bestest best characters ever, who weren't silly and underdeveloped in the least. >:
