Lame because of the visual aspect, or lame because of the music? Because if it's the former, then that argument is invalid; if it's the latter, then you're entitled to your own opinion. :)

I think the whole scene is sort of wanky and cultish, but if the music weren't so bad (more precisely: if I didn't find the music so bad) I think the genre would seem a little less hilarious to me.

I don't see how my argument is less valid if I find the "visual" end offputting. If you don't get into it, they look extremely silly, and people who claim they listen just because they love the music are deluding themselves; the wacky getups and cult of personality are a huge part of the enjoyment, for the fans of the genre. This hypothetical "music-only" listener is missing the point. It'd be like a blind person listening to comic books on tape.

My real opinion: I think the music sucks and the looks are lame. I'm pretty negative on the whole thing. I also think that the OP, in complaining about ugly people in a fandom clearly obsessed with "pretty," is being extremely consistent with the values her fandom, implicity or explicitly, champions.

It's depressing to be witness to such pettiness, but my moral superiority and vast intellect do provide some small solace.

Uhhhhhhhh just passing by here, but I'mma jump in with my two cents.

First uh, I think it's rather harsh of you to outright state in your original comment that "visual kei is lame," since that's just an opinion? Everyone is entitled to their opinions, sure, but to slam down something that other people might be very devoted to seems rather rude to me.

Also, I don't see how liking visual-kei for their music only would be so "missing the point," as the music itself has the tendency to be rather similar to generic rock or other such genres? sure, the visuals do play a part, but some people can't quite emulate that style the same and appreciate what they can - how does that make them any less of a follower? I don't quite understand that.

ALSO, uh, as anon said, all fandoms have the tendency to fixate on something on people who aren't in the fandom won't quite associate with, and thus might view as petty - again, that's your opinion, and you're perfectly entitled to it - but to call the entire thing petty is a bit, um, overly-harsh?

It may be blunt, but I am not the one complaining about ugly people in my fandom, so I think I'm still ahead of the game here -- I see your point, though.

And you raise a good one; there are plenty of people who listen to VK and appreciate the various looks of the artists without themselves dressing up in similar fashion. I didn't mean to suggest that failure to dress up was "incomplete" participation in the fandom, but rather that to that appreciation of the visual as well as aural aspects of the act is integral to the experience, and that it's probably disingenuous to claim that, for example, "I only like the music."

All that aside, the original secret was very much in the same vein as the anti-plain-people-cosplaying secrets/attitudes I run across, and my problem with it is similar, and boils down to, being unattractive is unfortunate, but being an asshole is much worse.

M-moral superiority? You just insulted a bunch of people based on the vocal few that happen to be the loudest. Not everyone in a fandom thinks the way that these vocal ones do. Otherwise the existence of a sane yaoi fan would be a myth.

But because you don't like a certain style of music/fashion means you have the moral high ground? When you just did this? I'm afraid that I'm going to have to go and laugh over here now, because WOW.

You're entitled to not like jrock/VK/whatever. Just like I'm entitled to not like country music or rap or any other genre. Since when does a personal taste for or against something mean you have the right to judge someone else for not having the same taste? Not to mention that fandom in general, not just the jrock/VK fandom is obsessed with pretty. FFS, look at anime in general. IT'S FILLED WITH PRETTY. Pretty people on TV, pretty people EVERYWHERE. I grew out of visual kei and its bad music when I was fifteen.
