Dude... did I actually forget to mention the bit about it actually being the truth? I've made three comments to this post on the subject, I guess it slipped my mind there. Ack! Though, personally, when I saw Zuko ALone for the first time, I took what Azula said about their mother as canon, and sort of... just decided "Okay, Ursa killed Azulon to save Zuko after Azula spilled the beans".

Though, just to be contradictory, I had a minor theory that is mostly unlikely that, originally, it was supposed to be AZULA that Ozai was going to kill, but Azula changed the story and told Zuko it was him. Azula gets pulled away for a talk with Ursa, Ursa goes to Ozai with a plan to save her child... it's the wrong child she's saving, but regardless. Ozai goes with it, uses it against Zuko later. I mostly just consider it because, well... why would killing Zuko be a threat? I'm sorry, I love the boy, but Ozai was grooming Azula to be his heir since childhood, he showed obvious preference for his prodigy and not his son. If Azulon really wanted to hit Ozai, he would have asked him to kill the child who meant more to him.

Theoretically, if it was the better child Ozai was supposed to kill, then that DOES make Azula a liar! But that might be me getting carried away with Ideas.

Zuko really is a terrible narrator.

I totally called that, too. As soon as the episode ended I was like "Ursa did it." Because even if Ozai had done it just to get on the throne, it doesn't explain why Ursa left in such a hurry.

I always got the feeling Azulon didn't know about Ozai's favoritism because he gave as much of a damn about Ozai as Ozai did about Zuko. Which I think explains a lot Ozai's animosity toward his son. Iroh was the firstborn and therefore special, Ozai was the sloppy second and therefore junk. So when Ozai finally has children, he takes out all of the jealousy and contempt he had for Iroh on his own firstborn, and treats his second child the way he wished Azulon would've treated him.

It was one of those "You expected me to be surprised?" things. DOBS really just confirmed it and said that Ozai knew about the plan... I mean, he already disliked Zuko, but I'd think that his intensified hatred and carelessness towards his son might have had a lot to do with the fact that his wife, who he loved, bit the bullet to save their worthless son. Ursa chose Zuko over Ozai, that night, and I think that might've stung Ozai pretty bad. Took it out on Zuko.

Azulon at least knew that Azula was superior to Zuko in many ways. Even that one history and technique demonstration was enough to prove that, but there must have been other things beforehand. While Azulon probably didn't care much at ALL about that side of the family, I don't know if I'd want to discredit him entirely by saying he wouldn't know at all. Azula said he'd grown useless as a leader, but even Azulon himself acknowledged Zuko as being a waste of his time.

I really do agree on the bit about Ozai passing on the way he'd like it to be, though. That speaks volumes. It's almost a good thing that Iroh and Ozai had such a big age gap between them, because it gave Iroh time to make a name for himself, enough to buy his father's loyalty entirely, even if Ozai grew up as being superior. That's what I got from Azula's comments, anyway.
