Non-canon nicknames used in fic. Though to be honest, I only like it when certain characters do it. Characters who I'd think would totally give out nicknames and it wouldn't be be ooc of them to do so.

Though I do hate it when it is overdone or an utterly ridiculous nickname that doesn't first the character giving it or who it is referring to.

I like it depending on the nickname. Like, Steve calling Bucky "Buck." But when people called Derek "Der", it makes me roll my eyes.

I can handle Laura calling him "Der" but that's it. Anyone else and it has me rolling my eyes too. Not entirely sure what the difference is for me

It bothers me when characters with canon personalities and speech style to draw from do it. Someone like Laura, who is going to be a blank slate no matter what, doesn't bug me at all.

You know, that's probably it. I was thinking it had something to do with family, but then if Cora did it, I'd still hate it. Because it would be OOC, whereas, you're right, Laura is a total blank slate.

I read a CM fic once where Morgan kept calling Reid "Sugar" and seriously abused the canon nick "Pretty Boy." I think they confused Morgan with Garcia, because it was SO OOC.

The only time I ever liked it was once where instead of "Sev" which always made me go screaming for the back-button, an author really convincingly and without fuss had Severus Snape be "Russ" to his lover.
