Seriously, can someone explain to me WHAT the big deal is about IP logging? Do they think that case is going to forward their kinks to their ISP or something?

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

People just don't like anything which de-anonimizes an anon community, no matter how slight. People are getting more and more concerned about preserving their online privacy in whichever way they can, no matter how small. We might not be able to keep things private from the NSA and the GCHQ, but we should at least be allowed to keep it secret from Case. It isn't much to ask, but now we aren't even allowed that!?

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-10 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't really an anon community, though. It's a community that allows anon comments. If you want to keep something private, don't post it online.

this thank you.

Nope, never ever again. Case is probably turning over our IPs to our bosses even as we speak with every little thing we've said on here and also selling our IPs to foreign hackers so he can make money off of us.

Given that this is Fandom Secrets, I literally can not tell if you are being sarcastic.

Case is selling our IP addresses to Dan Didio to spam us, because it is the only way DC are going to connect to new readers any time soon.

I knew there was something shady about those suspiciously cheerful woopers!

Even when IP logging is off, nothing you say or do here is actually ever private. Nothing you say or do anywhere on the internet is actually ever private. It's an illusion. It always has been.

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
JFC read the comment before replying, that was implicitly stated that there are only levels of privacy. Case turning the IP tracking on is taking one of those levels away. And it is actually one we can affect and preserve with a little warning.

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's a level that literally does not matter. It's like not going out in public because you're afraid someone might recognize you.

When it comes down to it, anon, Case runs his community how Case wants. It's not something you're ultimately entitled to (and even then he still goes out of his way to try to make it as accommodating as possible for everyone, and believe it or not IP logging is part of that when obnoxious trolls start in).

Now I'm wondering if you're one of those trolls. :|a

(also, I really do not feel like my privacy is being violated by this, even if I were commenting anon, seeing as how in the entire history of f!s Case has never shared anyone's IPs or sold them to anyone or anything like that)

:O I never thought of that, but that's really true, isn't it.

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

For me it's just that when IP logging is on I self-censor myself to a ridiculous degree, because I'm always afraid "What if this honest statement is viewed as overly hostile, even though I didn't necessarily mean it that way," and then I'm labeled as one of *those* people.

tl;dr: Paranoia and anxiety bring self-censorship to a point that goes beyond "maybe I shouldn't call that person an entitled brat, even though they're acting like it." It's tiring and not fun.

I think you're fine. IP logging is meant to stop bullshit like suicide encouragement, death threats, self-replying, etc.

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-10 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Self-replying isn't inherently bad.

IA.

It's not even a conscious thing. Just, when I have opinions that I know are wildly at odds with the general comm opinion, that I know I'm going to catch heat for, I'm just a lot more uncertain about posting them if IP logging is on.

I think there are probably a lot of people who have usernames who still go anon in super-wanky threads.

Yeah, this. I know I'm not the most active person here, but I've never posted a single anon comment. I want people to know who I am, I want to get to know others. How can we make new online friends when you have no idea if it's the same anon you replied to before?

Re: CAUTION: IP LOGGING IS ON.

[personal profile] thistlechaser 2014-09-10 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I think people don't understand what an IP address is. I had a friend, an adult who has spent plenty of time online, who asked me if someone could use his IP address to hack his computer.

IP addresses don't even make you that much less anon -- there are thousands of people out there right now with the same exact IP as yours.
