Re: Disappointment thread
Just realized that I've brought up the same topic (or mentioned it) three times in two days.
Ugh *facepalm*
Re: Disappointment thread
Honestly I hear a lot about people's 'horror stories' with OC fics, and find that it's not much different from experiences with fics without them. I've seen some awful and out there stuff with just canon.
Also after being in Harry Potter fandom and seeing the ABUNDANCE of Gary Stu Badass Independent! Harry fics, I've learned that you don't even need to have OCs to write Mary Sues.
Also as a writer I detest the approach of "well a bunch of people wrote this badly so it must be bad" . The issue with badfics is a writing skill issue not a problem with the concept. Say we do manage to almost completely discourage and get rid of fics with OCs. There will still be plenty of badfic.
Sure writers are going to bungle up character creation. A lot of people in fanfic are young. That's what beginners do. The last thing we need to do is attach a stigma to character creation. Failing at something sucks but the answer is not to avoid doing the thing when you fall and embarrass yourself. Not if you wanna get good. If you never use your bike again after the first time you fall, you're never going to learn to ride a bike.
Anyway, thanks. I'm glad to hear that my words made a difference.
