I LOVE BINGLEY

He's just so nice and happy! I don't mean that everyone in the world has to be nice and happy, but BINGLEY IS and I love it.

Bingley was an adorable moppet. I would have gone for him myself in a flash. I would read fanfic of Bingley just having fun, and being pleasant to others, and riding his horse about. Darcy was amusing, but in the end just too much like hard work.

It was a bigger deal at the time because Andrew Davies hyped it up as being the first time anyone had put sex into Jane Austen.

I agree. I don't completely dislike her but she's my least favorite of the Elizabeths I've seen. She was a little too melodramatic for my tastes. But I also thought some of that was that she had to say stuff out loud that she only thought in the books so that all the notes in the book were hit. It would be better if she'd had cause to say the stuff instead of just muttering to herself.

My favorite Elizabeth is from the Sir Laurence Olivier version.

*fans face*

(Anonymous) 2014-09-11 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I love that version. It's not my favorite but I do love it. Lady Catherine in that version is my favorite Lady Catherine.

I can't help but think about Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle getting busy behind the scenes when I watch this.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the Laurence Olivier version, the Timothy Dalton version, the Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth version, the Kiera Knightley/ Matthew McFadden movie version, the Mormon version, the Bollywood version, read and watched Bridget Jones' Diary and its sequels, and seen most of the Lizzie Bennett diaries on youtube.

And I've got to agree with the rabble - I think Jennifer was amazing as Elizabeth, miles ahead of the other Elizabeths and even better than Firth was as Darcy (and he is perfect in both this and BJD). I also think the 1995 version is the truest to the book - probably because as a miniseries it could proper weight to all parts of the story.

Sorry OP.

(To prove I'm not just a sheeple, I actually think the Mormon version is just as good a modern adaptation as BJD. And I didn't really like the Kiera Knightley version, though I don't know if that's a popular opinion or not.)

I disliked the Keira Knightley version. The casting wasn't great, but it was mostly the fault of the writing, IMO. It lost a lot of that Jane Austen flavor by modernizing the language.

I haven't seen all those, but i like this version so *very* much, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-11 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I didn't find her Elizabeth Bennet to be cold and unfeeling at all and her anger made sense in the context. What about it was irrational to you, OP?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-11 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think you were expecting Elizabeth to act like a modern romantic comedy lead.

Pride and Prejudice was not my favorite; I'll take Northanger Abbey any day. I think it's because I dated someone who was very much like Mr. Darcy and I found it kinda annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
...You know Northanger Abbey was a parody, right?

She never did anything for me either.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't find her particularly cold or unfeeling, but I did find her far too smirky and arch. Which is a reasonable interpretation of the character, but not how I prefer to read her.
