I don't actually do this, but from what I have heard (friends, etc) this isn't all that common. The "hands free" orgasm is the holy grail to some, totally not worth it to others.

I personally don't have an opinion one way or another, I just happen to know the majority of guys in my circle can't or don't bother with it.

During a scene, I took the time to think about what it is that's so appealing about being tied up/cuffed, because someone asked the other day, and I wanted to respond but had no idea how to. Now, I think I've figured it out.

When you're tied up and enjoying it, there's a few things going on:
1) You are aware of the fact that your partner is, at that moment, completely committed to arousing/pleasing you;
2) You have the illusion that "anything can happen;"
3) You very much want to touch and/or kiss your partner, but you can't.

So, you've got this interplay between pleasure, sexual tension, and unfulfilled desire. Each of those things can feel really good on its own; combined, they're out of this world. It creates a very desperate need, and that need makes every sensation feel more intense.

Well for the longest time I've felt like I haven't been able to get myself to properly orgasm. But then I realized...I don't even know how I would know what an orgasm IS or feels like.

I'm not trying to come off sounding too blasé or dismissive but I think you'd know if you reached an orgasm. I mean, I was 13, and I just squeezed my thighs together long enough, and I knew what I was having.

What the other anon said: if you have an orgasm, you know you had an orgasm. The first time I ever had one I was terrified that I was dying for a second. Well, a few seconds. And then I was like WHOA.

But, uh, suffice it to say if you're questioning whether or not you had one, you probably didn't have one.

Also, it's hard to give tips when you haven't said what it is you're actually doing. If you don't want to get into it, that's just fine, but there are better web resources for this sort of thing than fandom secrets.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you are. And...well, I know they say if you have to ask, you probably haven't had one, but the reality is that not all orgasms are created equal (esp. for women). There are the ones where your whole body is shaking and you can't move afterward, and then there are ones where it's like, "Oh...well, that was that."
Maybe you've experienced less intense ones and that's where the confusion is coming in.
(Of course, this is all from my own understanding of the process and I'm not terribly experienced, so YMMV, I guess.)

I've been stupidly horny and want to get laid so bad but my mental illness has been really effecting my life recently and making everything harder, including interactions with people, so I have no prospects.
