I was really angry with that book. It's apparently a great book for girls but I was so angry with the "oh the biggest thing you should get out of life is having a husband" bollocks - why does no one ever take the father to task for his leaving his wife & children to fend for themselves while he preaches with soldiers? They say in the book that his death would leave them destitute...!

and Jo, Jo...why???!

Those are some of the problems you get with author self-insertion.

Jo/Bhaer was actually LMA trolling because fans of the book (and her editors) wanted her to marry Jo off, while she wanted Jo to stay single, like she did.

The father was a chaplain in the army during the Civil War, not a street preacher following soldiers around for kicks. There was a huge push for enlistment early in the war, which meant that, patriotism aside, soldiers were also being paid relatively well. The Marches were poor before Mr. March enlisted, so enlisting would have been a chance to improve their lot that didn't involve excessive sucking up to Aunt Josephine.

Because Mr. March is fix-fic for Bronson Alcott. Having him run off to join The Great War of Liberation puts the family in a bind, sure, but it's easier to explain than "just had a lot of really important ideas and couldn't get around to making money ever." It allows the author to draw on her own childhood and adolescence while keeping the father a (more or less) admirable figure.

Louisa M Alcott's father did exactly that (only he was even worse with money than Mr March) and Louisa had to write to support her family. So I think she's pointing out to girls that you *don't* have to rely on your father - you can still have a good life and work without him. And thus Jo didn't marry for money while Amy did.

I disagree that Amy married for money -- didn't she turn down that Fred Vaughn guy who was supposed to be even richer than Laurie?
