Because Mr. March is fix-fic for Bronson Alcott. Having him run off to join The Great War of Liberation puts the family in a bind, sure, but it's easier to explain than "just had a lot of really important ideas and couldn't get around to making money ever." It allows the author to draw on her own childhood and adolescence while keeping the father a (more or less) admirable figure.
