Re: Character types you want to see more of!

- teen characters whose lives do not revolve around dating
- Older characters in general, especially competent older women.
- Disabled protagonists where the disability is no big deal
- characters that give a realistic pov of living with mental diseases or dealing with traumaa, but without that being the main plot point.

I didn't date as a teen either though I do admit that that's probably why I find teen romances fascinating sometimes, it's just that there's such an overload)

There you go again, bringing up your own characters again.

On that last one... The way mental illness is dealt with in major media typically annoys me, especially because so many of the films I hate end up being critically acclaimed.

I've just gotten to the point where I can't watch a film if I find out a main character is mentally ill.

What do you mean by older characters, like in there 40s or actual senior citizens, because I'm wondering if a character I'm thinking of is old enough to fit that criteria.

I was thinking of at least 50 and over.

Benjamin January from Barbara Hambly's A Free Man of Color mysteries isn't 50 yet, but he's got to be getting close. I'm pretty sure he was in his middle 40s in the third book, and the series is up to 12 books now. (13 next month.)

Also, his mom is pretty amazing.

Now that I think of it, the title character from Arturo Perez-Reverte's Captain Alatriste books is getting up in years too--he was 43 or so in the third book, The Sun over Breda, and now that the series is up to 7 books, he must be close to 50 if he's not there yet.

I'd really like to see more of the third and fourth types, myself.

I'd say yes to everything but the disabilities one, because disabilities are a big deal and I don't really want them brushed aside.

...unless you're talking specifically about having disabled protagonists where the plot doesn't revolve around their disabilities. That I'd be all for.

That th plot is not about, but also where it's not presented as something that determines your life (though I know it can be for some disabilities).

Sarah Jane Adventures! In which Sarah Jane Smith, a 60-something woman, is the action heroine/cool mentor who does the Doctor's/Torchwood's jobs--only better than them and with less angst and death. Also there's kid/teen characters whose lives revolve around fighting/helping aliens rather than dating. MY BELOVED SHOW I MISS YOU SO (Clyde you perfect companion be on Doctor Who already damn)

For older characters: maybe Ofelia from Elizabeth Moon's Remnant Population?

Re: Older characters, I just watched The Thomas Crowne Affair, and it had an older later/older man as the main couple/protagonists.

I think you'd like Foyle's War then, for having an older main character, his disabled sergeant (he lost a leg early in WWII), and their young (although not teen) driver/assistant whose life does indeed not revolve around dating. In fact, there's even some treatment of the trauma issue as well; some with Milner's transition back to civilian life, and some with Foyle's son Andrew and his best friend.

From that description, yes, it does sound like something I'd like!
