Character types you want to see more of!

Let's hear 'em!

Female anti-heroes. I'm over male anti-heroes, but I'd love more of the female version.

Female characters who are comfortable with and like sex without it being all about them dressing in skimpy clothes and looking hot. I mean, ones who are all about their own sex drive and pleasure, who know what they want, and don't feel bad about getting it.

Female nerd characters or intelligent female characters paired with hot males (or females for that matter).

Women in the "mentor" role

Does Amanda Waller from Arrow count as an anti-hero?

This, but only if she's not a femme fatale. That seems to be the only kind of female anti-hero we actually do get.

Yes, I would love more female antiheroes...or any. There's like unicorns.

Characters who just happen to be lgbtq.

Yes. Particularly more bisexual male characters or bisexual women whose bisexuality is only about male gaze and she's really just fully paired with men.

Yeah seconding this. It's a struggle to find stories with queer characters that aren't about the queer experience. Or is erotica. Which is fine, but I'd love just having an action/mystery/sci-fi/you name it where the lead character(s) just happen to be gay or trans.

Anon from above, pimping out Arrow again. Check out Sara, aka Black Canary, who happens to be bisexual and literally no one on the show even bats an eyelash about it.

Genuinely nice characters. I don't mean nice like "nice guy" or martyr complex or super saintly or too sweet to be real or letting someone walk all over them. I mean someone who's just a really nice person with no ulterior motives but feels real too.

This. And where that person isn't portrayed by every other character as boring or naive and those other characters portrayed as totally right.

Defrosting ice queens who thaw not because of romantic love but because of friendship or because they find mew meaning in life. Also, their tragic past can't be rape. Just sad, serious women who are finally able to rest and trust.

Totally late to this thread, I'm sorry, but have you watched/read Kimi no Todoke? YMMV on the "feels real" bit (he feels real to me, at least. >_>) But both the main lead and her love interest are really nice, and it's a really sweet manga/anime. :)

Single characters that don't date and/or don't have an interest. They don't even have to be fully asexual, but if the plot is really something that doesn't need a tacked on romance I'd love to see more stories where writers don't put one in.

Re: Character types you want to see more of!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-11 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to see more of this as well. There are a lot of people who just don't date or have a romantic interest for whatever reason. More characters should reflect that.

Class clown type.
Prankster type.
Nerdy intelligent awkward type. (In a Onoda from YowaPedal way, not Big Bang Theory way).

I mean this as lead characters, not side characters with no development used for comic relief. Or better yet, the love interest in YA books!

Characters who don't like kids and aren't penalized for it.

Not the kind who hate kids, not the grumpy kind who hate the world anyway, not the kind who just aren't any good with kids, not the kind who SAY they don't like/want kids but are secretly just worried they'd be a bad parent (*forever bitter about NCIS LA*), and especially not the kind who are turned around on the idea after some super special moment with kids (they just don't know how awesome it really is!).

Just a person who doesn't care for kids but can still be nice to them and talk to them if needed and even take care of them; they just don't want to and there is nothing negative about that.

- teen characters whose lives do not revolve around dating
- Older characters in general, especially competent older women.
- Disabled protagonists where the disability is no big deal
- characters that give a realistic pov of living with mental diseases or dealing with traumaa, but without that being the main plot point.

Female business leaders, politicians, etc. who aren't power hungry or femme fatales.

Having female action heroes, superheroes, etc. is awesome and all, but realistically we don't have superheroes. But a leader of some kind (business, political, etc.)? We have plenty of those roles and need more women in those roles, and I think people really need to start getting used to seeing women in those roles.

i.e. I love that Korra is such a badass young woman and all, but we don't have avatars in the real world. We do have business heads and engineers, which is why I love Asami even more. :)

Because I can't actually get any dorkier...

I'd like to see more Neutral Good characters, especially in genre fic/shows. You know, people who want to do the right thing because it's the right thing? People who will break the rules if the rules are stupid, but aren't just breaking them because they think rules are for sheep, and would be heroes even without Truth/Justice/Apple Pie or a quest for redemption or a dead hamster to avenge. I like those kind of characters.
