Re: Character types you want to see more of!

I've recently started working on having more characters like these in my stuff. Mostly to combat the idea that a character(especially a female character in YA) NEED a love interest.

Granted I do have a fair few characters with love interests. But I try to have a little of both.

AYRT. Oh yeah, I think it's definitely important to bring in more single female characters who don't have a love interest. It's a definite problem that most media aimed at women is all about romance even though if you ask a lot of real women we're interested in a lot of other things (even if we are interested in romance, it's not the ONLY thing we're interested in.)

I don't think romance is a bad thing to have in your writing, I think it's just important for it to make sense in the context of the story and to fit with the character personalities.

*nods* oh yeah.

I try to make sure the plots fit. And even characters do have romance they usually go at their own pace with it. I tend to believe in writing romantic relationships as two character's arc/journey combining. Every person's relationship is unique based on the two characters that are involved. What is romantic to one would be horribly weird or geeky to another. Romance isn't "one size fits all" (and neither is friendship but that's another matter)

(I would probably propose with a reference/joke about shipping. My dad proposed to my mom with a physics book)

Hi. I don't mean to be rude, but I think this thread implied what character types you want to see? in published or mainstream media.

Anyone can make go make any OC they want... that's different from seeing them in actual series and such. I'm guessing it's unintentional, but when you talk about your OCs like the people talking about characters they want to see in series should be interested, it sounds like you're saying your OCs are the equivalent of that.

Thanks ^^

I figured it wouldn't be much harm saying "oh hey! I have a character like that" *shrug*.

I wasn't trying to be rude, like I stated. If you're wondering, I'm not the same anon that was bothering jaybie before about OCs. I love OCs really, I have a few myself.

I was saying what it sounded like to go in a thread where people are saying character types they like to inform them "I have several characters like that." It comes off as wanting backpats for doing it right or showing off your OCs. I'm not telling jaybie to stop, and other people might not mind, and like I stated I'm sure it's unintentional on her part, but that's how it's coming off to me. I thought she might like to know that before the anon from yesterday comes in to bash her for talking about OCs again.

NAYRT

It's partly that Jaybie is starting to come off like one of those self-pubbed authors who butt into unrelated book discussions with "If you liked [book of the moment] you should check out MY book which you can order for $18.99 from PublishAmerica!!" And then they go off on a long tangent describing their ground-breaking plot and totally fresh and different characters--which are just like everybody else's ground-breaking plot and fresh, different characters.

Sounds more like you're trying to censor her. At least *to me*.

She can talk about what she wants and if the anon from yesterday comes around, she'll deal with it. But if one more anon adds to the pile of shit that she went through yesterday, she might start doubting herself and how she participates in conversations. Not cool.

For what it's worth, I had the same impression you did, and was debating whether I should say something or not.

That's how it comes off to me as well. You're not the only one.

Agreed. There's a time and a place for talking about your own works and it's important to be cognizant of that, otherwise you end up coming off as one of those self-absorbed people who only want to talk about themselves when the topic of conversation isn't about that.

Wow.

It sure is easy to keep piling on judgement to someone who's already left

That's too bad, honestly. I didn't see that when I commented; I just responded because it was a pattern of behavior that I too had noticed. They seemed like a genuinely nice person with a lot of enthusiasm but who just didn't know when to stop talking about their characters, which was why I warned that that kind of thing can make people think that you're self-absorbed even if that isn't the case.

I wish they'd listened to the advice they'd been given to tone it down a little rather than leave, but their choice.
