I teach college English. I am teaching a World History 1 class; we just did that text a week or so ago. We're doing Thucydides next week.

I'll admit I'm completely unfamiliar with Thucydides. But...it seems to me that your job would be quite fun.

Thucydides is the second father of history, Herodotus being the first. Both are ancient Greeks. When I teach Herodotus, I usually teach his account of Thermopylae. With Thucydides, I usually teach Pericles's funeral oration. At that point, the Greek city states had banded together because of the Persian threat; Athens took advantage of a fund set up for defense of all the city-states, and the Pelopennisan war ensued. Thucydides is generally considered a ground breaker for his objectivity and the way he seeks out multiple sources for a historical event.

Interesting. So...is he the first advocate for seeking out and using primary sources?

Kinda? I mean, I'm not a history expert, so I will defer to anyone else's expert knowledge here, but from what I can tell through my own research, he's one of the first to present an objective historical account through the effort of using multiple sources. He's also interested in motivation in a way that most of his contemporaries are not.
