Transformers. It isn't just that the movies are laughably bad. I just don't honestly get what is so awesome about even the concept once you get outside the toys. Toys that can change shapes? Cool. But why does that mean they make them into cartoons/movies/etc., and why are they so popular?

Stargate, to be honest. It turned into a fairly enjoyable movie, one really awesome tv show, one so-so tv show, and one not good tv show. But why did the crackpot theories of one random nut get made into a movie? I honestly don't understand why anyone at the time thought that was a good idea, even if the ultimate results were good.
