God, I love Edith. I loved her and Kirk's relationship. I loved that we got to know so much about her -- her job, her views, her hopes and dreams. It's one of the reasons I think TOS is so great -- that in 51 minutes, they could tell us so much about her and have her death mean so much. And I agree with you, OP, that the world needs more people like her.

That's not likely to happen though. When I look at where Trek is now in the reboots, I can't help but feel unbelievably sad. That optimism for the future is gone. And when you look at how female characters are treated…well, suffice it to say it's pitiful given that in two movies, we've learned far less about Uhura than we knew about Edith in one episode.

sad too, that for all the women walking around in uniform, hardly any of them are at the command level. JJ really doesn't get what Trek is supposed to be about.
