A lot of comedy is based on death and the awareness of death. (My guess is that it might be even more prevalent when the humour is surreal.)

I had never noticed all the death jokes in Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass until I read the Annotated Alice.

Death jokes in Alice, seriously? Jeez, you think you know a work...I've read those books backwards and forwards, even won forensics competitions with readings from them, never saw that *goes back to reread*

I never caught that many. I mean, a few I guess, it's hard to avoid when the queen runs around beheading people, but... huh, now I want to read Annotated Alice.
