What's so hard to understand about wanting to see your favourite characters broken and suffering? That's like exactly how you prove how much you love them. Supernatural and psychological suffering (with also angst!) is the purest of all forms.

So...there's a lot of suffering and pain in Silent Hill AUs?

If you're fine with BBC Sherlock, I'd recommend [livejournal.com profile] cleo_2010's Welcome to Silent Hill (also on her lj). It's of the SH2 personal hells bent, and it reads like a novelized version of the hypothetical game it would be—there are macguffins and puzzles that are naturally described and solved!—and has action right along original skeevy horror things that would fit right in in SH world. There's a mixup with the hospital used, but it's a minor nitpick if you read the story as is without looking for it. The story itself is fairly standalone if you haven't played the SH games either; references and nods to the game aren't direct or glaring.

Also, as a major bad negative, iirc, there is no UFO ending among the alt endings >:(
