I never wrote the story, but after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, one of my buddies and I spent some time talking about how we both could easily see one of the characters going through a Silent Hill like experience (like the one in SH 2) triggered by survivor's guilt. We spent some time fleshing out what we thought the experience and creatures might be like.

It really only works for 2, which has a lot more to do with making ammends/dealing with one's personal experiences, sins and shortcomings- rather than stumbling into a cult's lair. (I guess you could make a case for something like Shattered Memories as well.)

I guess you don't need the blood and rust to write a fic about that sort of thing, but I understand the appeal of wanting to do it in an established universe with rules that reader's will be familiar with.
