I like both songs a lot. Both have round their way into regular rotation during working out.

It makes sense, b/c Taylor Swift makes much better songs than Katy Perry

(more seriously, I think Shake It Off is more empowering because more grounded, maybe, but I don't know)

I'm sure plenty of people find Swift empowering..

Katy Perry is about as much of an empty pop tart as Taylor Swift. While I'm sure people have preferences one way or the other I can't imagine too many people find one of them to have noticeably more "profound" or "empowering" music than the other.

in what sense are you using 'tart' here

A baked dish consisting of a filling over a pastry base with an open top not covered with pastry.

Man, now that you bring it up I could totally go for a strawberry rhubarb tart.

I think the difference here is that in her "empowering" songs, Katy Perry comes off as a person whose life is fabulous, and that she's giving out advice to those who feel bad about themselves. And that's sweet just that she's trying, but it doesn't feel honest, I guess (unlike her song "By the Grace of God", which I love because it absolutely sounds like it came right out of her own life).

Meanwhile Taylor Swift strikes me as someone who genuinely battled/battles feeling stupid and silly and unempowered, and her empowerment song is as much for herself as for anyone else.

I like both artists but I definitely agree with this.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say I like either of them. They are both a bit generic I guess. They just seem like those motivational posters with the black border my guidance counsellor had. So broad that they where essentially meaningless.

What one person calls empowering, other people don't think so. The most empowering song I can think of and one that I really really adore is "Walking on Sunshine" by Katerina and the Waves. It just always gets me in a happy mood. That's one thing about music, it's the variables. It's because certain people respond to different songs and different lyrics. I have to admit that there are songs of EACH of those artists that I found insanely addictive. "You Belong to Me" always seems to play at wierd moments while "Roar" is definitely one of those songs that really just stick in my head. Just depends on the listener I suppose.

Also I've never heard the song in question so I was referencing another Taylor Swift song that seemed to get stuck in my head.

They both suck. Neither is empowering to me at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
They don't suck. You just don't like them. Nothing wrong with that but your opinion != fact.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Katy Perry is considered "empowering".

I must be getting old.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I don't follow her or her music, but her backstory IS empowering! :) Seriously, she was bullied in high school but continued to do what she loved. The record companies who wanted to sign her wanted her to wait till she was older, but she followed her own path. That's seriously hard to do as a young person. There's a reason her fans adore her, and I think that's part of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
And Sara Bareilles' "Brave" is more empowering than either of them.

[identity profile] jazmin_firewing.livejournal.com 2014-09-14 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I love Sara Bareilles. Her quieter songs come up a lot on one of my Pandora stations.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
"more empowering"...to you. Maybe someone else identifies with Taylor or Katy more.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
We have to come up with a name for you. Maybe Subjectivity Lecture!Anon?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think empowerment should be more of a personal thing. If something helps you or makes you feel more confident, it's empowering. Unless you're trying to tell people they're wrong for feeling empowered, there's nothing wrong with it.
