I don't follow her or her music, but her backstory IS empowering! :) Seriously, she was bullied in high school but continued to do what she loved. The record companies who wanted to sign her wanted her to wait till she was older, but she followed her own path. That's seriously hard to do as a young person. There's a reason her fans adore her, and I think that's part of it.
