Characters/shows people probably wouldn't expect you to love given your usual tastes in fiction

What the title says? Like, if you dislike 99% of sci-fi/fantasy, don't like old episodic shows without arcs, can't stand crappy special effects, and have a deep love of really modern realistic shows, nobody would expect you to love Star Trek TOS. But you do. Stuff like that.

I hate stories where all the characters are shallow terrible people, so most people might not expect that Seinfeld is my top favorite sitcom of all time.

Crossgen has several titles of stuff I don't like (horror, space opera war against lizards, prison break adventure story, etc.) but I tried them all because they were in the universe and I ended up loving every single one of them (ESPECIALLY the horror and space opera one).

Cartoons.

I watch a lot of heavy, 'adult' shows. Most people peg me down as a super serious woman. They're always shocked by how much I love them.

90% of books I own are thrillers, I get easily bored when a story doesn't contain action and instead focuses on more subtle topics such as family conflicts or finding yourself. Plus I hate children in media because they're often portrayed as just little adults.

Yet one of my favorite books of all time is "The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet" by Reif Larsen, a whimsical story of a young boy traveling across the United States and learning a few life lessons along the way with barely any action at all.

Sitcoms in general - I think people expect me to mostly like serious stuff. TBH I wish there were more dramedies (that weren't OTT).

Scrubs. I have a reputation for liking highbrow media, and my RL friends would go all Stanislavsky at me if I told them I adore the show.

I'm already three seasons in! Thanks to my little sister, who is a big fan and kept quoting chunks of the dialogue at me. We had some dozen watchalongs this summer.

Man, do I friend-ship JD and Turk. Also, JD and Cox. Pity all the fanworks I could find looked really bad.

The fanfic is pretty much all I-swear-this-totes-isn't-abusive-even-though-it-is!Cox/JD. I don't know, man.

Congratulations, you've made me morbidly curious and now I most go and browse the shippy stuff. So far I've only seen some terribly OOC gen (seriously, I only found one work that was written well). But I can imagine how creepy the Cox/JD stories in this fandom must be D:

The only good shippy one I can find in my bookmarks is this one. Actually it's more just lolarious than good, but in sitcom fandoms, you take what you can get, I guess.

I can't remember any good gen ones, actually, though I know there's at least, like, three, on ff.net.

I really started enjoying that show a lot more once I came to terms with hating JD and started enjoying seeing the show just dump misfortune on him.

That's... an unusual view o_o Why do you hate him, if you don't mind me asking? I struggled to find any Scrubs character unlikeable, let alone the main protagonist.

I don't know, I just find him kind of intensely, stupidly self-centered. I don't like his emotional neediness and I find his sense of humor (as distinct from the show's) kind of annoying. I just can't help thinking, when I watch the show, that JD would be the most annoying possible person to have as a friend, I guess.

I like everyone else on the show, though!

I can see where you're coming from, certainly, although I like JD. TBH I'd find it hard to view Scrubs as a story of countless misfortunes befalling him (because I think that's kind of not the point at all?), but it's good you found a way to enjoy it, anyhow.

Knowing my problems with crime/cop/procedural shows people wouldn't expect me to love Criminal Minds so much. Simple explanation, though - Hotch. I only watch because of him. *g*

Yes! Hotch is the man, and the number one thing to like about that show.

Grey's Anatomy and Project Runway. I'm mostly a scifi/fantasy or crime show girl with the occasional comedy if it grabs me. But I still watch those two shows.

Spartacus. I'm not big on stuff with uber violence and gore but somehow I ended up liking it a lot.

Say Yes to the Dress and other shows like it. I never wear dresses. I do not plan to ever marry. I think all the effort going towards a single day's celebration is ridiculous. I also don't think most dresses on that show are pretty.

I still really like watching it.

This is more of a general thing, but a lot of my friends and acquaintances have this picture of me where I like really morbid things and the darker the better etc. and I do like things a bit dark, it's true! But I also love to watch shallow reality shows, like ANTM, and gush about it which I know a lot of them have been surprised about.

People would be shocked to find out that I watch the reality show 'Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders: Making the Team." A) because I detest most reality shows like it and B)I'm a Washington fan.
