I agree. I thought Southland seemed quite realistic, though I don't know any cops personally so I'm not the best person to comment on realism. (Still, it felt a lot more raw and a lot less glamorous and overtly dramatic.)

Annnnnnnd that is the cutest dog ever. I want to hug him.

There is a blog from a former cop who watches cop shows and makes remarks about how close/off those shows are. Most of his episode reviews for Southland were basically "THIS. This is how it really works!"

The cast actually had to undergo training in a police academy before they started filming. Obviously not a full course, but enought to get a better understanding of what it's really like.

That's sort of nice to hear because the show felt authentic and was damn excellent television. It meant a lot to me while I was watching it. It felt like a lot of work went into making it realistic, though...that kind of makes the cancellation even more depressing.
