I have high hopes for this thread.

Well, A, I agree that cops are very often unrealistic, but they're not exclusively evil racist assholes in US media. Very frequently they're heroic paragons of virtue instead.

And B, watch The Wire and Homicide: Life On The Street. And probably some other stuff as well, like NYPD Blue maybe. I mean, there are things that are realistic about police and treat the characters as realistic characters. They're not as common, but they exist.

anyway, yeah, that does sound like a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
lol the media portrays cops as ~evil~ by your definition? on what universe outside some shows on MSNBC and real, actual liberal media outlets online.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to see more canons like that, too. You forgot one, OP: the cops that get kicked aside for the super special FBI or CIA guy who turns up and saves everyone from their own stupidity hurraaay

I think a lot of this "evil cops shooting innocent unarmed people omg" would be mitigated if people had any idea what it's like from the officer's side, and had more exposure to police officers as people, even if fictional, instead of this strawman "cop"

fwiw, one example of cops that are more in the middle of the two extremes you mention are Art and Agie on Orphan Black.

Also ... Hill Street Blues.

Cosigned. People are incredibly ignorant about law enforcement.

I agree.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
For all that some people stereotype cops as ignorant racists, one of the only people who helped my family after 9/11 was a cop. Being of mixed Middle-Eastern descent in a hugely conservative and racist part of the country was horrible and that man was one of the only people around who helped us.

Reality is boring and everyday people just doing the best that they can doesn't often make for shiny television.

Speed is a good example of what you're looking for. At least for me. And I get what you mean. I'm surrounded by peace officers on a day to day basis, and while some are jerks, others are amazing people. None of them are stereotypes.

I just want to see a little less of "we have to stop the bad guy ourselves because the police are completely incompetent!" (Though it was pretty funny in The 6th Day when the MC called the police and got put through a phone tree.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on the time period it was created. In the '50s and '60s there was...uh, Dragnet and Adam-12 stuff like that. Which was good in many procedure respects but paaaaiiiiinfully conservative and stodgy in its politics. Then, there was all the turmoil and racial issues in the late 1960s, and things changed. I recently read some really interesting articles about how in the 1970s and '80s, one of the only way to attract a liberal/young audience and portray cops as sympathetic at the same time was to go the "renegade badasses, fuck the law" and have the main characters needing to fight rampant stupidity and corruption in their own department route, because that was politically coded as "yeah, the police departments in general *are* crap like you've been seeing in all the riots and brutality and shit on the news, but Not All Cops are bad!" The exception was probably Hill Street Blues, but it were never as popular as Miami Vice (which ran at around the same time), for example.

Then in the late '90s and 2000s that "lol, all police are shit" started becoming more popular and that's probably the worst of it because it enforced the dichotomy between "lol bumbling morons" and "fascist mindless tools".

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The Closer (which actually bothered to show the consequences of not following protocol) and moreso Major Crimes are actually very good for this. The cast is a bunch of fleshed-out people and I'm pretty sure the research is up to snuff about how things are handled.

Well, if the cops were very effective in a superhero story there would be no need for a superhero?

Anyway I think the cops in Batman are usually portrayed in a nice light, though I'm not a big Batman buff.

The thing is- if you want to see cops being awesome, consume media the focuses on cops. The heroes of the story are usually portrayed as good, and the other as bad or ineffective. So media that focuses on cop shows them in a more favorable light.

Well. Former cop from Germany here. There's a reason why I don't deal well with police/crime/procedural shows or movies, and it's because I mostly experienced my fellow officers as either bumbling (sometimes well-meaning) idiots, racists, or neglectful, or corrupt. I was young and lacked the courage to say or do something, so I left. But it left a bitter taste, and it made me lose trust in people in general. So yeah, watching shows like you described, hits too close to home for me. :(

Offers you my tear-stained copy of Southland.

I know what you mean, OP. I've worked in law enforcement adjacent fields my entire working history. The people that I've known have been incredibly varied and rich.

I agree. I thought Southland seemed quite realistic, though I don't know any cops personally so I'm not the best person to comment on realism. (Still, it felt a lot more raw and a lot less glamorous and overtly dramatic.)

Annnnnnnd that is the cutest dog ever. I want to hug him.

Counterstrike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes has a couple of missions where you play as cops -- one where you storm a drug lab, another where you rescue hostages from a bank robbery before taking down the robbers. I think there's another where you play a police officer in Japan trying to stop terrorists from blowing up a subway.

This secret reminds me that I'm still waiting for a K-9 crime show. On the other hand, it would probably end up being all about the interpersonal drama of the people rather than focusing on the dogs.

You really should have waited, with the Ferguson stuff still ongoing and that whole thing still being swept under the rug by the police despite video evidence that the kid was unarmed and the cop was in the wrong.

Agreed 100%. media portrayals of the police are relativey horrible.
I feel like people would be less likely to jump to conclusions and start screaming about police corruption if maybe we could get them more humanized in the public's minds.
Of course, the dehumanization of police as individuals is kind of a theme for effective law enforcement, hence the uniforms and ehat not. But a little part of me dies everytime I have to hear a "dumb pig!" comment.
(Not that police corruption doesn't exist, it does and it's a problem that needs to be fixed, but a lot of times I feel like reporters like to play the 'guilty until proven innocent' card to sensationalize their headlines.)
