I'm at that stage where I have ideas, but need to get off my ass and whip myself into actually writing them. It's difficult because in fandom writing is such a social experience, but I haven't really been able to find a social environment for an original wip (which makes sense, I'm not saying it doesn't).
I wanted to join NaNo this year but November is going to be such an awful month for me that nope.

What I'm currently working on is a webcomic script. My partner I'm working with and I decided to write the whole thing about before we start drawing because the plot and world are so complex we don't want to get stuck with retcons and things (i.e., multiple cultures and religions, each one with their own societal quirks and architecture, integration of magic into a modern-style world, characters from different countries speaking different languages, etc)

Basically it's about a guy called Stratus who is a naga living happily in his naga tribe, until his "sister" (family units work differently there) falls ill. He is convinced by the doctors that the only way to save her is to allow himself to be turned human so he can go among humans and search for a cure. He agrees, but after the transformation he wakes up alone in the desert, blind, with legs he doesn't know how to use, and no idea what went wrong. He's found by Adele, a magician-doctor for the local mafia, and things get more complicated from there, especially when cities start being wiped off the map.

Right now I'm basically afraid that if I don't get the writing going faster I'm going to get tired of imagining the story before it actually gets written :(

This is almost word for word the problem I have...it's really disheartening to observe how almost ragey people get about WIPs, and yet, with my life littered with unfinished projects, I can't really blame them.

Plus, the project I had in mind is for one of yesteryear's fandoms (Harry Potter) and yet, it's so close to being an original fic (Grindelwald-era pastfic, all-OC cast) that there would be only a tiny audience for it, at best. And it would require a metric fuckton of research and even so, involve all the risks of writing about a group I don't belong to. (Half the fic was to take place in a Polish shtetl, and most of the other half in the magical part of Prague, in the 1930s...you can probably guess where this was going.)

Dude, anon, let me know if/when you do something with that HP pastfic, because I would love to read that. Really. That sounds awesome. In fact, if you have/had it posted in that form, I would have been exactly the tiny audience for it.

I also used to write HP pastfic with an almost-exclusively OC cast! My thing was Victorian/early 20th c. drama with Aberforth Dumbledore and the Patils' ancestors. And like two of my stories in this saga were murder mysteries.

I totally get that feeling of when you've done a bunch of research, and put all this development into the PAST of this pre-existing universe, and created a bunch of OCs... You get to a point and look at it and see that a majority of it is totally original and unique, but coming up with a new framework for it is such a pain in the ass.

Links? That sounds amazing!

I hasten to add this is the crap I was writing in high school (almost 10 years ago), and that I only ever posted the beginning of the first story. You can read more about the series here. I wrote the beginning of "A Poison Tree" and I actually rather like it, so if you really want I can email it to you (and tell you whodunnit). That's the one I would adapt if I were to ever make it original.

Everything else exists only in the form of notes, random scenes, and drawings. I should write down some of the content that exists only in my head before I forget everything completely.

Oh yes, please! I'd love to read that--even if it's just the beginning. I'm kind of in awe of how many young writers are prepared to tackle big, challenging projects and themes--it must be that fandom encourages it, which is great.

Okay, I'm gonna do a quick polish on this nonsense as it seems the only draft I have on this computer is my beta's with markup, and transcribe my outline (I totally wrote it on the back of some algebra homework, aaaah!) so it may be like 48 hours to do that. But I marked your message as unread to remind myself to do that. Getting these papers out is a total nostalgia bomb.

Oh goodness, don't sweat it! I'll happily read it whenever it shows up--I haven't read Potterfic for the longest time, and this is the biggest nostalgia trip for me!

Also, I would read your webcomic and hope you let us know when you start posting it.

Thanks! I hope to be able to advertise it here someday :)

And fwiw, your idea does sound cool, though I will not lie to you: it probably would have a limited readership. Then again, you might find some people interested simply because it's an original and interesting idea.

Thank you for the kind words--I actually ran across an awesome online source just today that would have been perfect for researching the story, and I'm thinking of dusting it off.

You can play around with it and see how you feel. I mean, you really never know. And the fact is, that while lack of appreciation can be kind of disappointing, maybe you'll just enjoy writing it for yourself. And maybe the fandom will surprise you! It's a huge fandom, after all (heck, I'd read it, but I'm not in the fandom).

I think you're right: at least start the thing! I keep making excuses for not going back to it--what if people hate it! what if it turns into one of those kerfuffles that wind up on Fandom Wank! And yet, when I mention it, people are nothing but kind and encouraging. Of course, it doesn't help that I'll seize on any excuse not to write. Or that all my plotbunnies are always giant mutant monsters straight out of Night of the Lepus.

I'm kind of the same as you - I keep on not writing because I feel like I need to think about it more, need to polish up some plot point, need to figure out art style... and in the meantime I'm not writing =(

And hey, ending up on Fandom Wank isn't the end of the world... if your fic becomes famous enough for that, it's some kind of achievement, isn't it? But I think that usually when things are taken seriously and if you try, the chances of you coming out awful are lower. You really should go for it!
