ORIGINAL STUFF THREAD

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-13 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So here's a thread for anyone to talk about writing, their characters, or writing related things. This was originally going to be an OC thread but I figured why not expand it into an area for writers to talk about writing, their process or their stuff.

This way the people who are bothered by it can avoid it , if it's all in one thread.

So have at it guys.

As much as I talk about original stuff, I want to hear about everyone else's!

Re: ORIGINAL STUFF THREAD

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I am experiencing hype backlash against one of my own original projects because my mother won't shut up about how great it is and how I should finish it and surely it will be published shortly thereafter. Like, it's not that good.

Re: ORIGINAL STUFF THREAD

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-13 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh. I can understand that. Pressure from parents to finish something really is annoying . I know that when my parents are like "why haven't you finished writing that novel it's been 8 years" I get annoyed and try to explain to them that sometimes it does take a long time. And that the time that's been taken has allowed me to work on writing and get prepared. Because if I had published the work I had in mind in high school, it would have sucked. "

Honestly I don't let my parents in on my writing (or the deep details) for that reason. (also because I feel like it will cause pressure for me to cut anything they don't approve of...but that's another story).

Maybe if you can, tell your mom that you appreciate her support but the pressure is getting to you and you'd like to work on your thing without feeling under pressure.

I really, really, really need to get around to transcribing the stuff I wrote this summer. I got a lot written, including one story that's been kicking around for ages, and finally fixed something that's been bugging me for a while - FINALLY hooked up the gay guys...I'd hooked up the straight couple because they were too cute, and had a lesbian couple become one of my favorite sets of POV characters...why couldn't I get the gay dudes to hook up? Finally I gave up on writing their getting together and just showed them being cute, and it worked!

Oh that sounds interesting. Working on romantic couples can be fun but also difficult at times, making the relationship work. Then sometimes ships just happen.

I also like the fact that you have so much variety. Is it a romance story, or are these all subplots.

Re: ORIGINAL STUFF THREAD

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
(I'm glad people like it! :) I feel less alone and awkward here.)

Hm That's always a hard thing to answer because I hate to leave someone out.

In different stories of mine I have multiple favorites to write, but I like all my characters in some fashion.

AiD:
Shiro , my protagonists' rival. comes really easy to me and he's fun to write. He's flirty, he's a snarker and also has a bit of a suggestive sense of humor. He's a guy who is basically caught in between family and conscience. He's a shapeshifter (human to animal). He's quite vain , but more out of feeling like he has to take care of his looks because they're all he really has. His whole story arc is about coming to question what he's always held as true.

Timmy- The dueteragonist. Skye's younger brother. A shy and soft spoken Empath and pacifist with Asperger Syndrome. He likes art, video games and puzzles. He is very idealistic and naive and his character arc is about him learning to be assertive and stand up for himself.

Gem-Skye's best friend. Gem is pretty crafty and resourceful. She's very insecure and a people pleaser which is something similar to me. A lot of her character arc is about her regaining her confidence. She also has to deal with racism in her small town because of her background. She is a sort of Do-It-Yourself Fashionista who likes fixing up old clothes. She also has a talent for gymnastics that she temporarily gave up on but eventually will find her way back to.

Skye- The protagonist- Skye was inspired by a mix of Harry Potter and Danny Fenton. He's a dry snarker type and very cynical. He's got a hero complex but the story is a sort of deconstruction of that playing it up as unhealthy rather than 'heroic and admirable'. He's stubborn and has a tendency to call out stuff he thinks is wrong especially when it hurts those he cares about. He's a bit of an overprotective big brother. His character arc includes him learning to be a leader, and learning to realize when he's wrong and deal with his self hate issues.

AA

Cameo Suites- The heroine Journey's best friend (outside of her group). Cameo is a normally cheerful busy bee and a pretty good entrepreneur. She is Journey's guide through her new school and her dormmate. Cameo serves a part as the dependable best friend as well as someone Journey goes to for advice. She has divorced parents and a bit of a minor subplot involving her mom and estranged dad. She's fun to write , the dependable best friend with a friendly hippie mom.

Salem Hexter- Ohhh boy. Salem is lots of fun. He's a performer and a bit of a showoff sometimes and the platonic best friend of another member of the hero's group. His parents are steampunk nuts and he's good at pulling off convincing accents. He has an interesting story arc also, with having divided loyalties between the heroes (because of his best friend) but also with their enemy (who he has some ideological sympathies with) and having to make a choice.

Mercury Stage: One of the youngest teachers at the RAA and the headmaster's son. He started as a villain but I quickly grew more close to him and he gained a position as a sympathetic antagonist and later possible ally figure with bit of a manipulative side. He is a Politically Motivated Teacher who initially uses students to challenge the authorities in place. However he also cares about the students in his own way and want to motivate them to reach their potential He was a mentor to a student who would go on to be a major antagonist after he teaches them some iffy and dangerous magic and she ends up killing a classmate on a mission out of a grudge, and he is now trying to atone for the damage he did by finding a way to bring her down without hurting her. He's very fun and charismatic , oozing with confidence (mostly because he had to growing up)and very laid back. He's the 'fun and cool' teacher and his girlfriend is the strict harsh teacher.

TttT

Toby Volkova- Protagonist- He was the first character I developed for this story and redeveloped. He's a dizy genius who is trying to follow in the footsteps of his wizard/chemist/alchemist older brother. He's an adrenaline junkie who loves a good rush. He loves nicknaming people and things, he doesn't see why his brother gets all upset about him roasting his dinner over the bunsen burner and he can take something apart in 30 minutes and rebuild it in an hour (give or take). He has shadow powers and a mischievous sentient shadow. He's a tad childlike for someone his age and behind in maturity, though he makes up for it with his advanced skills. I like writing him because he's a cutie.

Dr. Adrik Volkova- Toby's high strung older brother. Adrik is a brilliant former teen alchemy whiz from humble backgrounds who just wants to prove himself. He is rather persnickety and very insistent on his title of doctor. He's a gentlemen (and hinted at as being just a tad awkward around the ladies at times and easily flustered). He tries hard to live up to his father's expectations of him, and cover up his roots with a put upon high class accent. He has a bit of a temper and has a tendency to blow up with frustration when he has issues with his projects. However he is also very well meaning and principled. He also sees something in Toby that a lot of the high class intellectuals don't and what his father refuses to see. He tries his best to be a father substitute to his offbeat younger brother.

I have too many to name. The pack of werewolves I started writing in the 80s, before everyone went nuts with werewolves? The community of witches who pretend to run a magazine, but really solve problems (in the werewolves' universe)? The demon and her master? The steampunk characters, trying to solve why women are being murdered? The weird west characters?

It's hard to say. Generally, whomever I'm writing at a given time is who is my favorite.

I actually recently had a request from an agent to read my manuscript. It's about a kid who has the power to set things on fire by snapping his fingers.

While that's out on submission, I'm writing another book. The main character saw his first angel when he was nine and drowning in the Atlantic. He saw his second angel when he was fourteen and there was a car crash that killed his parents and royally fucked up his shoulder. The third time he saw an angel, she was huddled in a corner of his garage, naked and unable to speak.

Eventually the angel is going to turn out to be a risen demon, and she ends up choosing to be neither and takes a third option. The boy's got a friend who sees demons, the King of the Cats makes an appearance, and the boy and his brother come to terms with the deaths of their parents and their relationship.

My problem with my original projects is that I get hit with inspiration for one in particular... and then I end up overlapping all my other ideas with it in terms of character archetypes/relationships/et al. This is why I can never get anything done, ughhh. Because right now, I've got two stories with ensemble casts, and the main characters are starting to blend together. Hhhhhhgh.

Also, I'm still debating what I'd like to do so far as a (web)comic goes. I know I'd never be able to keep up with a webcomic pace/schedule since I have lots to do IRL, so I'm contemplating writing/drawing the whole thing out ahead of time and then either selling it as a cheap digital download on, say, Comixology and/or then serializing it online ala a webcomic, but not quite. I'm very intimidated by the prospect, tbh, but I know it's the only thing that would work out for me.

I'm at that stage where I have ideas, but need to get off my ass and whip myself into actually writing them. It's difficult because in fandom writing is such a social experience, but I haven't really been able to find a social environment for an original wip (which makes sense, I'm not saying it doesn't).
I wanted to join NaNo this year but November is going to be such an awful month for me that nope.

What I'm currently working on is a webcomic script. My partner I'm working with and I decided to write the whole thing about before we start drawing because the plot and world are so complex we don't want to get stuck with retcons and things (i.e., multiple cultures and religions, each one with their own societal quirks and architecture, integration of magic into a modern-style world, characters from different countries speaking different languages, etc)

Basically it's about a guy called Stratus who is a naga living happily in his naga tribe, until his "sister" (family units work differently there) falls ill. He is convinced by the doctors that the only way to save her is to allow himself to be turned human so he can go among humans and search for a cure. He agrees, but after the transformation he wakes up alone in the desert, blind, with legs he doesn't know how to use, and no idea what went wrong. He's found by Adele, a magician-doctor for the local mafia, and things get more complicated from there, especially when cities start being wiped off the map.

Right now I'm basically afraid that if I don't get the writing going faster I'm going to get tired of imagining the story before it actually gets written :(

Maybe I'll actually participate in NaNo for once this year, because reading all of those defense lawyer blogs made me realize I have legitimately never seen a story about a defense lawyer who's defending someone who they believe is probably (but not definitely) guilty and yet still does their best because that's their job goddamn it. Probably don't know enough about the law to make it realistic though.

I have a novel-length fic that's been stalled in the planning stage not for months, but for years. Completely out of the blue, I happened upon the most amazing online encyclopedia for the period and region where it's set and the people who would comprise most of the characters. It has made me want to write this story all over again, and fuck the minor issues that it's for a fandom of yesteryear, or that it would be an OC-heavy pastfic.

the first story i ever finished was when i was about 14. i wrote it mostly while i was in a rehabilitative facility, and it helped me cope. it was bad - again, i was 14 - but when my stepmother threw it away i was still pretty unhappy about it. i thought about it decomposing in a landfill somewhere or having the ink run when it rained and eventually i just considered it lost.

the plot was bad, the characters were ok but could have used work, and the writing style was underdeveloped. but i thought the story itself could be saved; in time i'd forgotten many of the plot points, but i decided to rework the plot and write everything from scratch.

can't remember how old i was then but it's been a few years. im still, STILL trying to work out the plot. i've been trying to write again - i stopped for awhile - but i can't seem to progress in the story, which makes sense because my hopes for the plot are still really vague.

i'm also no longer happy with the writing style. i don't think the pace is very smooth. there are long periods of dialogue and then paragraphs of silly details.

i'm also in the process of rewriting the second (and last) story i ever finished, but i just don't have the mental energy right now. the quality of my stuff has suffered in recent years.

Can I talk about insecurities? I think my characters all sound the same and my plots are weak. People always gush over my stuff because I can make pretty sentences but I am severely lacking in other important aspects and I don't know how to make it better. I'm also afraid to edit and re-write old stuff. I say I'm letting it sit for a while and that I'll come back to it later, but I never do. I just let it rot. And yes, I realize these problems are linked.

I've been doing out a list of some of my fictional universes lately, the ones that probably will never be written owing to being too old/big/complicated/childish/embarrassing/personal/etc. Just for a personal pet project, I've been listing them with name, genre, a little blurb/summary, and for some of them a character listing and brief faction outline.

I'm noticing that I have something of a type when it comes to central characters. Well, okay. Three types, really. There's the captive/slave/lower-level bureaucrat who starts a domino effect of small changes that snowball into massive plots, there's the outcast/disliked magic user who ends up embroiled in political turmoil, and there's the charismatic military/political leader figure trying to end a war/reign of terror/etc. (Yes, I like politics-heavy fantasy, though I dabble in space opera and the odd dystopia as well).

Out of around thirty odd universes, these three character types are central to about twenty four of them. They're not always the main main character, but they're usually among the main plot movers in most of them. Only about four of the universes have more than one of them at once and at roughly the same level of plot importance, though, and those are the really big, sprawling ones. So at least that's something. But yes, apparently I'm very predictable when it comes to central characters.

They're a bit more varied in the specifics, though. There's multiple genders, races, ages, sexual orientations, species and subplots involved. It's just the character role/type that I seem to get stuck on, for some reason.

After a long period of not really writing anything non-school related, I have finally gotten into the worldbuilding of my original novel again.

It started out as a spur of the moment NANOWRIMO novel some years ago, so I hadn't really fleshed out the world prior to writing and only had some vague ideas about the culture and geography. And then I've just not really built out on it from there, focusing more on fleshing out the characters the times I've worked on the project.

But a couple of weeks ago I suddenly got some inspiration after seeing a friend of mine making a map of the world from her story. I decided to try it out as well and since then I've worked on making a map, rewriting some of the history and culture of my fantasy nation, its relationship with neighbouring countries, the political environment, the nature of magic in it and so on.

There are still a lot of things I've not yet worked out like the fashions and level of technology (I'm currently thinking about renaissance level, but I also sort of want a medieval steampunk-ish vibe à la Final Fantasy IX), and I don't really have the time to really sit down and write and fully focus on it until December when I'm done with all exams and such. But right now I'm having so much fun just developing it on the side to distract me from all the things I have to do for school this year.

I am currently on hiatus from my webcomic, Hurlyburly due to my offline life being more hectic than two rabid badgers in a gunny sack. But I still like talking about it to keep in the forefront of my mind.

Basically, the plot is about a woman named Agnes who wakes up with a Demon named Purson sitting at the foot of her bed with no memory of the night before that led him to her. She then discovers her house is haunted by a British soldier from the American Revolution named Tom. (Who happens to be a Supernatural fanboy.) And while trying to flee to work, finds an Angel named Hasmed on her lawn in the shape of a giant flaming wheel with eyes and wings. The Angel takes on a humanoid shape to talk to Agnes. Hasmed ends up fighting with Purson who is revealed not to be an ordinary Demon but a Fallen Angel. (Hasmed and Purson are siblings.) While fighting Agnes slips out and rushes to work. Hasmed and Purson stop fighting and realize that they have to find Agnes or else. (Dun, dun, dunnnn.) And that's chapter one.

In chapter two, Agnes winds up in work only to have a nervous breakdown in the middle of her office when the denial she put herself in after meeting three supernatural beings snaps. Her best friend, Dee, snatches her up only for Agnes to discover that her best friend is actually not human but a Sidhe. (Agnes can no see through Dee's magical disguise.) Agnes freaks out even more and Dee drags her to the bathroom in order to talk. Dee asks Agnes what is going on. How come Agnes can see through magic now. Agnes tells Dee what happened to her that morning. Dee suggests that they find a way to recover her lost memories because that may offer a clue. Agnes agrees. And that's when Hasmed and Purson pop in having found Agnes again. Dee tries to protect her best friend. Purson realizes something is off about this set up with everyone standing there in the bathroom and he thinks he knows what is going on. What is really going on here. That's when an office manager comes storming in the bathroom demanding to know what is going on. Hasmed turns her into a pillar of salt. While distracted, Dee and Agnes flee by using the bathroom mirror as a portal. Purson tells Hasmed what he thinks is going on. That this whole thing, Agnes, the Sidhe, the Ghost, the Angels and Demons is set up by God. A test or an experiment. And that's where I left the story.

And I need to get back to it because I left it just when Purson was explaining what the whole story is about. I just need more time and a better way to manage it. Because it stinks to stop at a cliff hanger of this,

(Hasmed is blue because Angels are blue in the comic. And Purson is read because Demons are red in the comic.

Every NaNo I decide to take a break from fanfic and tell myself this year I'm finally going to write down one of the many original stories I have in my head, and every year I hit 50,000 words with the story only halfway done -- if that -- and then I set it aside and end up never going back to it. I even tried to work on one story for two NaNos in a row and still couldn't finish it. I feel all excited when I start writing but the further I go in the story the more I hate it. I know in my heart that no story leaps onto the page fully formed and you have to edit and all that but I just can't stop myself from thinking this original thing I spent all month on is crap and why should I bother finishing it. And it's also kinda frustrating because sometimes these ideas and characters have been sitting in my head for years and once I attempt to write it for NaNo it feels like I can't even really think about that story properly anymore. I almost don't want to try to write my stuff down now so I can just keep the images of it in my head.

There's a story I want to write. It's sci-fi, set in a megacity run by corporations. Immortality is available to the ultra-rich, so you basically have billionaire heads of these corporations who live indefinitely.
The main characters are a woman who comes back from the dead and reinvents herself in order to get revenge because of reasons (idk, some kind of Count of Monte Cristo type thing.)
And the other is a ... someone, idk what her job is, but who meets this woman and is sort of entranced by her. All I know about her is she's upper-class, but only in a "token" sort of way, because she has a disability and this whole city runs on eugenics.

Problem is, I'm REALLY unclear on the plot. I don't really know the how or the why and it's driving me insane. Maybe someone else will be able to see clearly, where I get lost in the details.

Oh man, I missed the thread. :(

Please tell me that this is going to be a thread that happens again! (Maybe a weekly thing :O?)
