Re: ORIGINAL STUFF THREAD

I wish I could finish something original. Every NaNo I decide to take a break from fanfic and tell myself this year I'm finally going to write down one of the many original stories I have in my head, and every year I hit 50,000 words with the story only halfway done -- if that -- and then I set it aside and end up never going back to it. I even tried to work on one story for two NaNos in a row and still couldn't finish it. I feel all excited when I start writing but the further I go in the story the more I hate it. I know in my heart that no story leaps onto the page fully formed and you have to edit and all that but I just can't stop myself from thinking this original thing I spent all month on is crap and why should I bother finishing it. And it's also kinda frustrating because sometimes these ideas and characters have been sitting in my head for years and once I attempt to write it for NaNo it feels like I can't even really think about that story properly anymore. I almost don't want to try to write my stuff down now so I can just keep the images of it in my head.

ME TOO. SO MUCH.

I don't even try any more because I feel like nothing I write fits that image in my head.

Something that's helped though, is reminding myself that it's just a first draft. We get to see the author's finished, polished product. We don't see all the failures and mistakes and abandoned WIPs and crappy writing that lead to that point.

The first draft is just... plopping the raw materials down on the workbench. We actually shape it later on.
