Minor perks of your job

What are yours? Mine , working in a grocery store is that I get to learn where all sorts of ingredients are for making food. One day I hope to be able to make some of the recipes on my blog.

I'm an office assistant, and I honestly think my job has helped me know how to handle calls (as well as conversations) with assistants, receptionists, that sort of thing. You'd be surprised at how many people have NO CLUE how to call an office. I'm patient with them, it's no big deal, but for instance, people hate elaboration. Except that's the only way I can help you! You don't need to give me your life story, but "got milk?" just throws me off, and it's not an efficient conversation for either of us.

That's always a useful skill to learn.

I imagine it probably sucks if people won't give you what you need to do your job. :/ Good thing to know.

It's mostly a problem when they act like I'm the idiot. I mean, I can certainly understand how from their perspective it might be obvious (they know what they're talking about, so....), but that doesn't mean it's obvious from mine.

Yeah that's the worst.

When I worked in the toy section of Walmart I got a call from this guy who gave a request and a bunch of numbers at the speed of light and I'm like "sir can you slow down?" and then he starts ranting at me about how "I've called 7 WALMARTS AND THEY HAVEN'T HELPED ME" and I'm trying to tell him to slow down but then I'm just like "I'll give this to a supervisor" Supervisor takes the call and forwards to a manager and is like "he is NOTgoing to talk to me like that". I looked at her wide eyed and said "...what'd they say to you?"

Break comes around I notice some of the managers there and ask "hey what happened with that bike guy" come to find out he CUSSED OUT THE MANAGER.

Damn. and to think all this could have been avoided if he just slowed down and repeated the numbers.

Ahah I'm still working on the codes. Some of my coworkers are lovely and gave me a little notepad with all of the major ones written down.

Hm Those both sound really awesome. Coping skills are nice to learn (I could use some of those at times) and so are free veggies!

Free medical tests when the interns need to be shown how to do them. Saved so much money on cholesterol tests on this job.

Ohhh that's awesome!

Very nice. I take it you're a nurse?

No, I'm a desk jockey who works in the hospital's cardio/weight gym. But we get a lot of interns running through, because our nurses do testing at a lot of local businesses for their insurance procedures. So, BP/weight/BMI+cholesterol testing happens lots.

This is totally shallow but one of the best minor perks of my job is all the hot guys.

I mean, seriously.

I work at a farmer's market and at the end of the day, my boss let's me take home whatever I want.

Today was half a box of plum tomatoes so I can put them in mason jars tomorrow and make homemade tomato sauce.

The best is getting fresh picked corn. As in, when I eat it, it was picked only a few hours before and it tastes amazing.

I work at a Goodwill and I have to research stuff we get in. It's gross, some of the nasty stuff you have to touch, but it's cool to learn about items you had no idea about before. I got to load and play a turn of the century projector once. It was pretty cool.

Hmmm interesting.

That sounds pretty cool. I worked at a donation thrift shop once and wound up finding the novel The Black Dahlia (also a psychology textbook).

You find interesting things at places like that.

Yeah, I haven't come across it myself but my co-workers have seen multiple urns filled with human ashes.

Current job, I get to work from home. Not making a fortune like the spam ads say, but, it does save me transportation time and expenses and lets me get some personal stuff done during the day. The hours are reasonable and the pay's adequate but not awesome, and the actual work itself sucks ass.

I worked a couple of previous jobs at an outlet mall, which were nice because I got employee discounts and incentives at my workplaces (this was back when employee incentives were still a fairly common thing,) and a mall employee discount at various other shops there. My favorite was the one at Harry & David.

Ahhh. still working from your home would make it better tho I'd think. Or worse depending on how easily distracted you are.

Working in a mall would be wonderful. But I'd probably never save anything so I guess its not good for me.

When I used to work retail it was always nice in the first couple weeks after Christmas you could get some great deals from stuff people returned. And occasionally first pick of stuff that got marked down -- like once I worked Halloween and got some cute pajama pants for 1.99 because they had black cats on them and we'd marked all our Halloween merch down for the holiday.

Free soda. But it's Coke and I don't like Coke so I guess it doesn't matter? XD
