book club thread: October tiebreaker

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-09-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So it looks like we have another tie.

This is just a two-way tie. Tiebreaker poll is here and will be open for two days. On Wednesday night I'll put the results up.

Would it have been a tie if the poll had closed when you originally said it would?

S.A.
It might not have been you that messed with the date. I don't remember, but aren't there Moyer than one of you running this thing?

I'm the main organizer, and Bigpaw is helping me.

Nah, been watching it. It's been static for days.

Yes. Actually, if I'm honest, part of my motivation for delaying it (one of several factors, but still part) was hoping the tie would break on its own.

The 29/29 tie is exactly the same as it was yesterday morning. I think everyone who was going to vote had already done so.

Tie-breaks are an intrinsic part of a multi-vote system. Try next month having only a single vote and I bet it'll come out in favour of a clear winner.

That's definitely a thought, but I had several people come out with a strong preference for multi-votes when I started organizing a couple months ago. I can definitely see what people think about that alternative.

*sadface*

Neither of these is available in my libraries (again). Gonna have to sit out this month again, I guess.

Aw, that sucks! I'm sorry, anon. I thought most of them (except one - it might actually be that last one, but I'd have to look at them again) were fairly accessible.

Out of curiosity, how big is your library system? Did it have the first couple of books we did (when missing_y was the organizer)?

AYRT

Fairly big, actually. I'd prefer to stay anonymous as to my location, but the way things are structured in my country (I'm not in the US), I've got two libraries right near my house, and like six more just a smidge further out. The selection across those libraries is usually quite wide, with literature across a range of countries, genres, etc.

I wasn't really around for the first few meetings, I think (had some RL stuff going on). I remember I did manage to get The Golem and the Jinni, though I wasn't able to take part in the discussion. Don't remember what the other books were, though...

Wow, I'm really surprised you don't have access to those books, then. Seems like you'd have a larger selection than me. But if you're not in the US maybe it just has to do with international availability or relative popularity in different areas? I really don't know :/

Yeah, I figured it was probably one of those reasons. But no worries! I like hearing what people have to say about books even if I haven't managed to read them, so I'll still follow the discussions, and look forward to when there's a book I can take part in discussing =D

I really hope there's a book you can read featured soon! Thanks for sticking around, anon, I'm glad you're participating :)

They are available, incredibly cheaply, though from Ebay and Amazon. Admit it, you just do not want to take part and are using an excuse. Weaksauce dude. Just be honest if you don't want to take part instead of making lame excuses.

I think you might be confusing me for other anons - I've always been supportive of the book club, but luck of the draw means I haven't been able to read the past couple of books or whichever will get picked this time. (I was the anon who brought up the availability issue just before the new poll went up, and suggested it factor into tie-breaks at least.) It's in no way a statement on the organisers. There are only so many allowances you can make with people from all across the globe, and you certainly can't cater to everyone's ability to get the book. I'm fully aware of that, and have nothing but respect for diet_poison and Bigpaw for pulling this together.

Right now, every dollar counts for me, so no. I'm not going to buy the books, "incredibly cheap" or not. (Also, way to go assuming everyone has cards to buy stuff online - which no, I don't.) I'll just join in when a book's chosen that I can borrow from my local libraries.

Are you the same anon from before who called another reader "weaksauce" for not liking pregnancy? Please stop going around and making these snide comments to other participants. Also, way to be dismissive of the fact that not everyone can afford to buy something they don't need (not saying this is the case with ayrt, but seriously, don't assume if you don't know).

ETA: read their comment, and apparently it is the case. So even more so - don't go around making assumptions about people.
