Honestly it's getting to the point where there really isn't anymore, at least with the recently released shit. The closest I can think of is Attack on Titan and even it has some pandering bullshit and features teen heroes.

Current season has Barakamon whose protag is 23 year old dude who does caligraphy for a living. I *think* Tokyo Ghoul has adult protags too, I'm not much about the dark and edgy stuff these days. Space Dandy has an adult protag as well. And all of these are aring right now.

I mean, high schoolers definitely dominate the market, but I'm looking at a 2004 anime chart and it's about the same ratio.

The wiki page tells me that the protagonists of Tokyo Ghoul are 19 and 16, respectively, Space Dandy is accompanied by moeblob animals, and while the protagonist of Barakamon is indeed an adult, from the rundown of the cast list he's literally almost the only character who is one.

Tokyo Ghoul mostly meets it in practice as those two characters for all intents and purposes read as university students (is there a term for this? Almost the reverse of 'this character looks twelve but is a thousand years old', where a character is clearly intended to be older, but given a low dob not supported by the material), and the dual protagonist is an investigator in his late twenties, with all but one other central and tertiary character being comfortably adults.

You've also got Mushishi, Terra Formars if you're okay with the worlds most racist monster designs, Akagame Ga Kill, and uh? Give me a second to check the season charts, out of the dozens there has to be at least five, come on.

There is no freaking way Tatsumi from Akame ga Kill is older than a teen, dude. I am enjoying Akame ga Kill because it plays so strongly against type, but still, he and Akame and Mine and half the rest of the assassins are clearly meant to be teenagers. I'd be enjoying Psycho Pass more if a) they kept the art style consistent and didn't have some semi-realistic characters and others straight out of a bug-eyed, uber knock-kneed shoujo manga, b) they didn't launch right into the lesbian schoolgirl (at a wealthy girls boarding school, no less, that just ~happens~ to be just like the schools of old) arc right after setting up a more interesting premise wrt hologram technology and the new place of the internet in their futuristic society.

Mushishi is airing now? I did not know that. But it's also based on a manga that started in the 90s.

And as above the protagonists from Tokyo Ghoul are actually still teenagers. One of the first hits I got googling it was literally a schoolgirl in a school uniform wielding a katana with a full-on panty shot. Maybe that's a one-off that gives entirely the wrong impression of the series, but it does mean it still has pandering bullshit.

Upon consideration, sure I'll grant you Tatsumi, and Mine, and Sheele, realistically Akame, but I mean apart from that.

And honestly the elements of that arc are all the sort of things which could have been done very badly, but came together well in practice. I had a whole essay on this which I can't dig up, but for the executive summary - the entire point of the arc is an indictment of mainstream yuri. You have all the original elements, with young girls being traditionally dressed in a nostalgic fashion, enagaging in traditionally 'ladylike' club activities of painting and theatre, the traditional sempai preying on the underclassmen dynamic, and what is originally set up as pure relationships with none of the baggage of an actual relationship.

All of which the villain of the arc attacks as representing a script that the girls are following, to allow them to create the perfect product for men to marry. Nothing is ever meant to come of the subtext, it's merely a prop to demonstrate their purity, but she violates this when they end up in bed with her, and she takes it to it's most extreme conclusion in her treatment of them, literally turning them into works of art (and throughout she re-interprets everything through her own agency).

Which leads into Psycho Pass' other issue which is that there is really more sexual violence then is comfortable.

re: Tokyo Ghoul, I honestly don't have a can't think of what character you're talking about here. But I'll cede the point.

Tatsumi, Mine, Akame, Sheele, that green-haired dude, the new red-head that showed up in the school uniform (I'm only as far as the anime right now), Akame's sister, the blond shota henchman of the ice general... come on man Akame ga Kill is a good show but it's still riddled with random teens, including the protagonist and his probable (?) love interests.

Full disclosure: I'm not finished the lesbian schoolgirl arc of Psycho Pass but I'll come back and read this when I am.

In retrospect I just considered the setting and didn't put any real thought into that choice at all.

And lets be serious, it's not close to a good show, it's complete trash - just enjoyably so.

You're right about the teen heroes, but there's still a lot of solid non-moe anime out there.

Have you watched Zankyou no Terror? The leads are teens, but there's zero pandering and it's really interesting. You mentioned Psycho Pass, and iirc the lesbian schoolgirls arc is only three episodes of twenty-three, so it's pretty short. Samurai Flamenco features adult leads. The lead starts out nineteen, but he's twenty less than half way through it and the deuteragonist is twenty-three. I'm not too familiar with Space Brothers, but the protags in it are adults. Dramatical Murder isn't really my thing, but again, entirely adult cast.

I've kind of gotten past the teen hero thing. Anime has always been like that, even back as far as the 70s. It's only that rare anime that really and truly stars adults.

edit: Oh and unlike the others listed, which are all from within the past several months, there's of course Fate/Zero. Only a couple of years old, and the main cast is all adult outside of one teen.

Hmm, is Mushishi too old now? Terror in Resonance has adult characters, but you're still stuck with the teenagers as main POV.

All too aware, unfortunately. I just wasn't sure if it could be counted since the newest season is a sequel to something that pre-dates most of the current trends. At least they released another special in between the break.

To be fair, in AoT the teen "heroes" are actually kind of useless and the current manga arc is all about the adults doing things and the kids tagging along... and the sparkly protag Eren has been relegated to 'magic sword to be fought over' status. (which... is not actually good writing. But at least it's not all about the teens all day)

So basically you don't know shit about anime except the popular ones. Ping Poing aired six months ago, it's one of the best anime I've ever seen. A mature and realistic story that no one watched because of the art style. Having teen heroes doesn't make it a bad story. But anyways, if you think all anime is '8 years old with a medical Ph.D." kind of bullshit, you don't know what you're talking about.

Ah yes, my dissasifaction with the preponderance of teenaged protagonists in anime means I that I think "all anime has an 8-year-old with a PhD."

Maybe there's an eight-year-old with an MD out there who can help you with the anal agony you seem to be experiencing.
