I think you're really overthinking it.

I think they are too.

Richard Garfield didn't invent the terms "white magic" and "black magic." It's an old trope.

In M:tG specifically, white is like the sun, sustaining, fiery, and sometimes violent, and black is like rot and decay. (Green is wild growth, Red is lawless, violent, mineral and fire, Blue is mind and water. They all play multiple roles because there are only five major colors.)

It's not really anything to do with "black" and "white" races. The white heroes of Jamuura (Mirage block) were often quite dark-skinned.

I'm confused by the mention of John Galt in S2. Isn't the point that you're looking for some Black-aligned *heroes*, not more villains?

White-aligned villains (Heliod, the Order of Heliud (no relation I hope), Elesh Norn) are pretty easy to write and come across. White is the color of dogma, facism, and total submission.

Now Black-aligned heroes are a completely different story. Did we ever have any besides Umezawa?

Thankfully I don't follow the storyline in M:TG and I just enjoy the game for what it is.

didn't the Kamigawa set have a Black hero who was actually likeable? And a lot of White characters are pretty jerkass, aren't they?

But what are people expecting with this system? Why is there even a need to rush to the defense like that? Is anyone actually upset about this who isn't a rabid, disturbing tumblr SJW?

Yes, White cards can incorporate themes like facism and oppression etc very nicely if you want to paint the colour more evily, but Black hasn't got much to work with in terms of positive themes since it's always been based on selfishness and corruption and decay. But I don't see a problem with that. Do players of Black really feel marginalised?
