[Russell Edwards' Naming Jack the Ripper]

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Is the Russell Edwards thing the new Jack The Ripper theory?

Yeah, I think From Hell is just as much of an AU as it always was. It was never very plausible as an explanation for the actual crimes & the over-hyped new identity thing doesn't change that at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiis. The new reveal is sketchy, and that doesn't change how outlandish old theories were.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOLed at the guy who said, "MY DNA is probably on [the shawl]!" referring to how sketchy the "finding" actually is.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like... you do your thing, OP, but you're not exactly shaking anything up.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it me or does the man in that art cover resemble Derek Jacobi when he played Professor Yana/The Master in Utopia on Doctor Who?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed that was what the secret was going to be about until I read the text.

Every few years they come up with a new theory. Remember when it was Walter Sickert? I liked that one.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The artist! That was a really interesting theory.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
In my young day it was J. K. Stephen, Prince Eddy's tutor.

I remember someone claiming that it had been the Queen. I wish I still had the links, because it was hilarious in the way that only truly fucked up conspiracy theories are.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
That one was fascinating.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the one dude who insists it was Lewis Carroll, through the cunning use of anagrams and the number 42.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
this secret makes me angry on so many levels

urgh

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Why?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What, you don't like the new theory, or you're one of the SJWs who hates Moore?

One of the first things I read about that new theory was an article on The Guardian, and I haven't taken it seriously since. A shawl bought at an auction by a "self-confessed armchair detective" is not going to convince me of anything.

It's a work of fiction

It was an AU all along

This.

Also I love that throwaway bit about SJWs and Moore. I'm not a SJW and I dislike Moore too. He's a self-important hack with a rape fetish. He has some good work under his belt (Swamp Thing for example) but so much of it is just... Alan Moore.

OP CONFESSION TIME

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah OK OK OK I just posted this secret b/c I wanted to spark discussion about it. Here's the real Bonus Secret confession: I actually liked Knight's book.

*OP awaits the pitchforks and screaming*

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH THESE FUCKING S!Bs

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Why, why, why does every single secret have to scrounge around for some whiny passive-aggressive "meeehhhhh I'm so ~persecuted~ and this opinion is so ~edgy~ and ~revolutionary~ I'll be ~martyred~ if I admitted it out loud!" excuse to tack on?

Just post the fucking secret. We don't need no steenking persecution-complex-dripping s!bs.

I think it's mostly to prevent the "Why is this a secret?" questions that pop up all the time.

As much heck as this book is getting (before it's actually for sale and anyone can actually read it), I think it has enough circumstantial evidence to pretty much make the case. Aaron Kosminski was already one of the most likely suspects, a DNA connection just makes the evidence all that more damning. I think I'd feel comfortable saying that chances are really high that he was Jack.

But yeah, from what I've heard about it, From Hell was always very AU-ish, as it picked a particularly unlikely "real" killer. But hey, the movie did inspire Russel Edwards' interest in Jack the Ripper, so that's something.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
No, he wasn't. He was never considered a suspect during the actual murders. His name didn't come up until years later and NOT from Scotland Yard.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know, it's not just SJWs who hate Alan Moore. I hate him for being a miserable killjoy asshole who looks down on superhero comics because he's a grumpy old man with nothing better to do :D
