I don't know about that, I grew up on the East Coast and my house always had double sink and the house was built in the 50s. It's possible the kitchen was redone, but the sink had been there since at least the early 80s (it was that way when my parents moved in)

Meanwhile, the apartments I lived in the South were a single sink both times.
