I think split sinks are a relatively recent thing - only likely to show up in newer houses or major renovations - and there are more old houses on the east coast, so single sinks are more likely in the east.

I don't know about that, I grew up on the East Coast and my house always had double sink and the house was built in the 50s. It's possible the kitchen was redone, but the sink had been there since at least the early 80s (it was that way when my parents moved in)

Meanwhile, the apartments I lived in the South were a single sink both times.

Seconding what Shorty said: the house I live in was built in 1958 and has a split sink; the house I grew up in was built in 1970 and has a large single sink.

Pretty much. Split sinks (double bowl sinks) require different plumbing, but they're also a single piece of metal in a weird shape rather than a simple bowl. A lot of houses have been renovated to include them, but they didn't used to be all the rage like they are now.
