sinks in NE

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
A friend has moved to the East Coast and apparently houses/apartments there have one big sink instead of two smaller sinks (like I've seen in the South/Midwest). Is this true?? Why do you suppose this is, FS? *puzzled*

They have one sink for the house instead of two (one bathroom and one kitchen)? Is that what you mean?

Re: sinks in NE

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, oops, I guess my description wasn't very clear... I mean that the kitchen apparently has one big sink that is the size of two smaller sinks (instead of having two smaller ones that can be filled separately).

I live on the East Coast and my house has a split sink in the kitchen. So... no, not everywhere?

Re: sinks in NE

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, same. Both my apartment and my parents' house have the split sink setup in the kitchen. (Their house was built in the '60's, my apartment is in a building that was converted to living space last year.)

Re: sinks in NE

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been true in my experience too. I don't know the reason for the difference, but it's possible to do your dishes effectively in both styles of sink.

Re: sinks in NE

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've lived in the West and in the Midwest, and all the houses I've ever lived in have only had one sink. But I've had friends and known people in those areas who've had the split sinks.

I think it's just a matter of what sink the person building the house puts in, anon, not a regional thing.

I don't think there is a difference? I have seen double sinks in the NE and single sinks in the Midwest. I think it just depends on whoever built the house.

Though, why someone would want a single sink, I have no idea.

It's bigger. Bigger is better.

Well that explains the huge sink in the house I stayed in on the East Coast... I just thought it was a quirk of the house. Huh.

Yes? Is this not a common thing? I've not been in a house before where that wasn't the case other than my godparent's house. They're in the NE too, but I didn't realize two sinks was a common thing.

I've only known two sinks: one with the garbage disposal and the other for well… not! I'm using mine currently with the the side that does not have the disposal as a drying rack.

I think split sinks are a relatively recent thing - only likely to show up in newer houses or major renovations - and there are more old houses on the east coast, so single sinks are more likely in the east.

I think it has to do with preference and what will sell because they have slightly different utilities.

Does the house have a dishwasher? If not, it BETTER have a double sink, because dishes are a lot harder to hand-wash without one. If it does, the bigger single sink can be good for scrubbing and other sink-related activities because there's more room. Some people (such as myself) also prefer the look of a larger sink. (Though I hope wherever I move after this doesn't have a single sink, because I'm unlikely to be able to afford an apartment with a dishwasher xD)

I like in the NE, and there are both types.

Nah, I have the split sink and I'm pretty sure we've had that in every house or apartment we've lived in.

Well, my parents and I all live on the East Coast. My parents' house was built in 1983, and originally came with the double sink. I live in the same area my parents do, my house was built in 1987, and originally came with the larger single sink. So I guess it varies depending on builders and whatnot?

A big sink is often better for washing large cookware, like some broilers. I like a sink big enough to put a couple of dishpans in, thus turning it into a split sink, until I need to get something really big under the tap.

Depends on the house. I personally prefer triple sinks because I worked in a restaurant for a long time, but those sinks are hard to come by in residential buildings.

I did not realize that sink construction varied by geographic region! I just figured they varied depending on what the house builder wanted, or something, I guess.

It's a style choice, not a regional choice, BTW.
