getting over a cold

(Anonymous) 2014-09-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
so generally when i get a cold, my throat gets kinda scratchy for a few days, pretty sore, then the congestion comes on. so i've learned how to spot when i'm getting sick and can prepare for it.

this time it came on literally overnight but i'm hardly even functioning at this rate. through experience, whenever i tried to fight a cold, instead of helping me get better it would just drag it out? like i'd feel a bit better but i'd still be sick for DAYS. i tend to get better faster just riding it through.

but i'm down for the count this time. i can hardly breathe. what helps you guys get over a cold? or at the very least, what helps you feel better during it?

Tea helps me feel better whenever I have a cold, especially lemon.

Honey and Lemon can be very helpful. Even a spoonful of honey, while kind of cloying, can help quite a bit, especially for a sore throat.

Echinacea tea also speeds up my recovery time. Plus you know, tea is warm and nice on the throat.

Well, is it a week long cold? Or is it a couple days cold, with sinus crap the rest of the time?

I tend to drink a lot of loose leaf tea when I'm not sick (green, white), and my colds tend to be shorter, but I still blow my nose the rest of the time.

I'll eat hearty soups like chicken noodle or something full of vegetables, or even sip on homemade chicken stock. Sometimes I'll add beans to the soup.

Ginger tea can help with inflammation. But obviously, don't overdo it.

Generally try to stay away from eating so much crap during a cold as well. Your body needs to get better and can't heal itself on doritos and skittles. Drink plenty of fluids and rest.

The beef, broccoli and noodle soup they have at the local Chinese place. It has loads of ginger, garlic, star anise and dried red pepper, so you start to sweat and your nose starts to run almost with the first sip. I swear that stuff can nip a cold in the bud.

Plenty of sleep and liquids. Hot soup helps a bit with congestion, but you can always try over the counter drugs, too. Sudafed-- get the good stuff behind the counter that contains Pseudoephedrine, it's more effective than Phenylephrine. You may not feel like eating, but try not to skip meals.

Oh, and don't bother with crap like Airborne or other things that promise to treat colds. They're bullshit.

Oh my yes. You might have to sign a book for it, but unlike those wimpy off-the-shelf pills, it actually works.

Lots and lots of Sudafed. And I'm talking the meth-making kind, not the one you can just pick up off the shelf. I like a combination of Sudafed, Mucinex and Delsym, that usually does the trick for me.
